The Indian Air Force is preparing to stage a massive and combat-inspired aerial display over the city of Varanasi to celebrate its 94th anniversary. Titled 'Wings Over Ganga', the scheduled air show will take place across October 22, 24, and 25. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the concluding ceremony on October 25 at the Namo Ghat in Varanasi. The primary objective of this grand exhibition extends beyond a traditional flypast, aiming to demonstrate the operational capabilities and high-readiness state of the Indian armed forces under simulated combat conditions.
Operation of 100 Aircraft Across 12 Airbases
To execute this extensive display, the Indian Air Force is deploying 100 aircraft operated from 12 distinct airbases across the country. The fleet comprises 52 fighter jets, 32 helicopters, and 15 transport aircraft. This major military operation will highlight seamless coordination between the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. As part of this integrated drill, the Indian Navy's P-8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft will take off from Arakkonam near Chennai. It will subsequently rendezvous with Mirage-2000 fighter jets over Gwalior before joining the main air show event in Varanasi.
Prachand Arrowhead Formation Debuts Publicly
A historic highlight of the air display will feature six front-line fighter jets flying together in public for the first time in a 'Prachand' arrowhead formation. The participating aircraft list includes the Sukhoi-30 MKI, Rafale, Jaguar, Mirage-2000, LCA Tejas, and MiG-29. These jets will fly equipped with live operational weaponry, including specific munitions that were deployed during Operation Sindoor. Previously, India hosted the second edition of the large-scale multinational air exercise Tarang Shakti 2026 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, which saw participation from air forces representing over 40 countries.
Simulated Air Combat and Infrared Recording
The schedule also incorporates a simulated two-versus-one combat dogfight to demonstrate tactical maneuvers. Two Jaguar aircraft will execute high-speed low-level attack runs near Malviya Bridge, while a Sukhoi-30 MKI performs an interception maneuver from above to counter them. Furthermore, during the performance, one Sukhoi-30 MKI will execute a high-speed vertical maneuver directly in front of the spectator gallery. Simultaneously, a second Sukhoi-30 MKI will record the entire routine from an altitude of approximately 8,000 feet using an infrared imaging pod to capture thermal telemetry data.
Grand Finale with Surya Kiran and Sarang Teams
The spectacular air show will conclude with precision aerobatic displays performed by the Indian Air Force's renowned Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team and the Sarang Helicopter Display Team. Their synchronized maneuvers will bring a fitting close to the multi-day aviation showcase. In other leadership developments within the defense sector, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit was appointed as the new chief of the Indian Air Force, bringing extensive operational experience from Operation Safed Sagar to Operation Sindoor. Official footage showcasing the strategic integration of Brahmos SU-30 systems has also previously been released.
