Zcash (ZEC) held its ground around $1,275 on Monday following three consecutive days of gains, which included a 4% advance the day before. Trading near $1,278 at the start of the week, the privacy asset has staged a steady short-term recovery. However, deeper institutional participation remains muted. Grayscale's ZEC-focused investment vehicle, the ZCSH ETF, saw $30 million in capital outflows over the past week. While that represents a notable drop from the $93 million pulled in the prior period, the continuing redemptions highlight persistent hesitation among institutional market participants.
From a chart perspective, the asset faces significant technical hurdles. ZEC remains trapped under both its 50-period and 200-period Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) on the four-hour chart. Failure to clear these overhead markers exposes the token to a potential bearish continuation toward the $1,050 zone.
Technical Resistance and Looming Death Cross
Price action on the four-hour timeframe shows Zcash consolidating right beneath the 50-period EMA at $1,279 and the 200-period EMA at $1,274. The rebound over the last three sessions has nudged the short-term market bias into a neutral stance, pulling it back from an outright corrective tone. Yet the underlying technical structure remains delicate. The downward-sloping 50-period EMA is approaching a cross beneath the 200-period EMA, which would confirm a Death Cross pattern typically associated with extended downward momentum.
This overhead moving average cluster is reinforced by the September 9 swing high near $1,296, presenting a formidable ceiling against further upside. A decisive breakout above this resistance cluster would clear immediate downside risks and open a path toward $1,422, a level established by the September 18 low. Conversely, a rejection at current levels could trigger another downward leg toward the primary support area at $1,050, marked by the September 4 peak.
Momentum Indicators Offer Glimmer of Buyer Support
Despite the threatening moving average setup, short-term momentum readings are painting a more constructive picture. On the four-hour chart, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is holding around 58, comfortably above its midpoint. Concurrently, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram and indicator line are advancing alongside the signal line. These dynamics indicate that buyers are actively trying to seize market control, though the lack of institutional inflow remains an obstacle to sustained progress.
Broader Crypto Markets Face Volatility and Network Shifts
The hesitation in Zcash mirrors broader softness across major cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin (BTC) dropped more than 4% over the week, changing hands below $83,000 on Friday as heavy selling pressure disrupted the anticipated seasonal "Uptober" momentum. The pullback was accelerated by profit-taking, an uptick in long position liquidations, and cooling institutional demand. Over 17 years ago, Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin following the global financial turmoil as a decentralized alternative outside the grasp of central banks, governments, and traditional intermediaries, yet the asset continues to respond to macroeconomic tides.
Meanwhile, Ethereum (ETH) achieved an essential milestone toward its upcoming major network overhaul. The planned technical adjustments focus on boosting Layer 1 capacity and operational efficiency amid rising on-chain usage, even as ETH pulled back toward the $2,500 threshold.
Ripple (XRP) also remained predominantly under seller control on Friday around $1.40. While the cross-border payment token found footing after tumbling from a weekly peak of $1.53 to a low of $1.32, the path of least resistance continues to tilt lower unless bulls secure a decisive daily close above the $1.40 barrier.
