The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar has intensified its investigation into the significant fraud identified during the NEET-UG re-examination. At the Tetarhat police station in Lakhisarai, an intensive seven-hour interrogation session is underway, led by EOU DIG Manavjit Singh Dhillon. A total of 30 arrested suspects are being questioned in an operation that also involves Lakhisarai SP Prerna Kumar and the entire EOU team. Given the high-profile nature and extreme sensitivity of the case, the DIG has strictly declined to conduct any media briefings or share specific details at this stage. According to information from sources close to the investigation, this closed-door inquiry is expected to lead to the exposure of the true masterminds operating this entire solver syndicate.
Breakthrough During the Re-examination
This entire process stems from major revelations made during the NEET (UG) re-examination held on June 21, 2026. On that day, police conducted raids at examination centers in Lakhisarai and caught 9 fake scholars red-handed while they were taking the test on behalf of other candidates. Investigations revealed that the majority of these apprehended scholars were themselves medical students in their first or second year. These individuals had been positioned to replace genuine candidates. As the investigation progresses, it has become evident that the network is complex, and the potential involvement of several prominent doctors is also under intense scrutiny.
Lakhs Involved in Financial Dealings
Earlier investigations uncovered that this was a highly organized criminal group. They operated by charging vast sums of money to ensure genuine candidates passed the examination. Their business model was structured such that half of the total agreed-upon amount was taken as an advance, while the remaining balance was collected only after the results were officially declared.
Involvement of Biometric Staff
The Economic Offences Unit has now fully entered the investigation process. After starting with the 9 fake scholars, the scope of the inquiry has widened to include the solver gang, biometric personnel, and approximately 30 of their associates who have now been detained. The investigative team is working to determine which staff members at the examination centers colluded with the gang to bypass fingerprint and biometric identity verification protocols to allow these fake students to gain entry.
Strict Disciplinary Action by PMCH
In a related development, the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) administration took significant disciplinary action on July 9, 2026, regarding the NEET-UG 2026 scam. Following an FIR registered at the Kiul police station in Lakhisarai and adhering to explicit instructions from the Health Department, PMCH suspended the enrollment of MBBS student Ashwini Kumar with immediate effect. Consequently, his hostel allotment has also been revoked. Principal Dr. Geeta Sinha stated that this action was taken after verifying photographs published in newspapers, enrollment registers, and mobile numbers. The investigation revealed that the accused student was absent from special classes on the day of the incident. Ashwini is accused of colluding with a biometric employee to compromise the identification process and sitting for the exam in place of another candidate. The college administration has affirmed that once the EOU investigation concludes and the charges are proven, the student's enrollment will be permanently terminated.
