Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan recently opened up about the fascinating backstory behind the creation of the smash hit song Dard-E-Disco from the film Om Shanti Om. Farah recently visited music composer Shekhar Ravjiani at his farmhouse, where the duo fondly recalled memories from the past.
How The Song Idea Was Born
During her conversation with music composer Shekhar Ravjiani, she shed light on how the concept for the track originated. The song featured Shah Rukh Khan, whose high-octane energy on screen became a massive hit with audiences. Farah, who remains quite active on social media, revealed that she stumbled upon the idea during a party hosted at singer Sonu Nigam’s residence.
The director and choreographer shared that she and Vishal Dadlani were together at Sonu Nigam’s party. While chatting, people pointed out that Bhushan Kumar believed two distinct genres of music dominate the Indian audience: heart-wrenching sad songs and upbeat disco tracks.
Approaching Javed Akhtar
Recalling the moment with a laugh, Shekhar noted that Farah had asked them right then to create a track titled Dard-E-Disco. They took this fresh concept straight to veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar. The team shared a few lines and ideas with him, which included quirky phrases like San Francisco and 26 ko. Shekhar playfully added that the entire thought process stemmed from Farah herself.
Farah further revealed that they specifically urged Javed Akhtar to pen the lyrics in a style reminiscent of legendary poet and lyricist Gulzar.
