Actress and Mandi Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut has sparked fresh debate over the recent protest organized at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Releasing a video message on her Instagram account on Thursday, the politician-actor challenged the narrative portraying the demonstration as a nationwide movement driven by Generation Z. Pointing out the crowd's age distribution, Ranaut highlighted the presence of veteran actor Shabana Azmi to argue that the gathering did not predominantly represent young citizens.
Demographic Analysis and Crowd Figures
In her video, Kangana Ranaut provided a detailed breakdown of the attendees gathered at Jantar Mantar. She estimated the total crowd size at approximately 10,000 individuals. Addressing the definition of youth, Ranaut noted that when specifically discussing Generation Z, the conversation typically focuses on individuals around 30 to 35 years of age or younger. According to her assessment, only about 2,000 members of the Jantar Mantar gathering actually belonged to this demographic.
Ranaut questioned how a gathering with only 2,000 young participants out of 10,000 total attendees could be framed as a countrywide Gen Z protest. She claimed that individuals across various age brackets were present, with more than half the crowd consisting of older demographics similar in age to Shabana Azmi. Based on these numbers, she asserted that labeling the event a reflection of India's entire youth population was misleading.
Presence of Veteran Actors at the Site
Several prominent figures had visited Jantar Mantar to express solidarity with protesting students. Senior actress Shabana Azmi attended the site, where viral video clips showed her raising slogans and seated on a truck among the demonstrators. Actor Prakash Raj was also spotted at the venue alongside other attendees. Ranaut cited the participation of these senior artists as evidence that the crowd was heavily composed of older age groups rather than being an exclusively student-led gathering.
Clarification on the 'Gutter Generation' Remark and Open Challenge
The controversy follows earlier statements by Ranaut regarding the protest, during which she had referred to the attendees as a "gutter generation," criticized the Cockrage Junta Party, and called actor Naseeruddin Shah a "fox." Addressing her previous remarks, Ranaut maintained that her comments were specifically directed at the crowd assembled at Jantar Mantar rather than the country's youth as a whole.
Issuing a direct challenge to her critics, Ranaut stated:
"Show me any specific statement where I included the entire generation."She urged critics not to push what she described as a baseless agenda against her, asserting that she herself is young and could never be anti-youth. Explaining the context behind her strong language, she noted that she felt deep aversion to the environment and speech used at the protest venue, adding that some individuals involved were neither excelling academically nor making positive contributions to the system.
