Malini first caught the public eye through Bombay Vikings' popular music video Kya Surat Hai. Following that, she made her mark on television before landing a role in Vikram Butt's 2002 horror movie Raaz, which starred Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea in the lead roles. Though the leads drove the narrative, Malini left a memorable impression, particularly in the song Aapke Pyaar Mein. Interestingly, around the time of Raaz, she famously walked away from another film titled Encounter, stepping down from the project just 48 hours before shooting was scheduled to begin, according to media reports.
Leaving Bollywood Behind
Following her initial success, appearances on screen steadily grew sparse. She was previously married to actor Priyanshu Chatterjee, who gained popularity through Tum Bin, though the marriage did not last and the two eventually divorced. As she distanced herself from acting, Malini did not leave her life empty. She initiated a project called The Show Local, which focused on promoting local food, crafts, and workshops. This journey eventually led her away from urban centers and into the tranquil Sahyadri hills where she resides today.
The Cats TV Show and Tragic Fates
Reflecting on her earlier television career, Malini starred in Cats in 2001, an Indian television series inspired by the Hollywood show Charlie's Angels. The series featured Nafisa Joseph, Kuljeet Randhawa, and Malini Sharma as the three lead stars, running for about 32 episodes and enjoying considerable popularity at the time. Nafisa was a prominent model and television personality who had won the Miss India title in 1997. However, just three years after the show ended, in July 2004, Nafisa died by suicide at the age of 26. Roughly a year and a half later, in February 2006, Kuljeet Randhawa also ended her life at the age of 30. While her former co-stars met tragic ends, Malini chose to step outside the entertainment bubble and build a world entirely on her own terms, far away from the demands of stardom.
