Renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli continues to generate immense buzz surrounding his highly anticipated upcoming project titled Varanasi. The grand action-adventure film features South superstar Mahesh Babu in the lead role. The director has now shared a major update regarding the scale of the movie, revealing that it is going to be significantly larger than his previous global blockbuster.
A Massive Scale Compared to RRR
According to SS Rajamouli, from every possible aspect, Varanasi is being crafted on a canvas that is roughly five to six times bigger than his previous massive hit. During the 50th Sao Paulo International Film Festival held in Brazil, the director spoke at length about his grand cinematic venture. He noted that despite working on such a gigantic canvas, his production team managed to wrap up the shooting of Varanasi in considerably fewer days compared to RRR, which took a much longer time to complete. For context, RRR was released in the year 2022 and crossed the 1200 crore mark globally at the box office.
Extensive Preparation and Efficient Shooting Schedule
SS Rajamouli explained that ever since his childhood, he has been fascinated by stories rooted in mythology, history, and legendary heroes. For Varanasi, he invested an immense amount of time in paperwork and pre-production planning so that the crew remained thoroughly prepared before stepping onto the sets. While sharing operational details, he mentioned that while RRR took 315 days of shooting, Varanasi was finished in just 275 days despite its vastly larger scale, effectively saving 40 days. This rigorous background research and meticulous planning enabled the team to execute a massive canvas efficiently within a compressed shooting schedule.
Plot, Characters, and Global Locations
In the film, Mahesh Babu portrays the character of Rudra, an archaeologist who gets dispatched on a perilous mission tied to an ancient cosmic artifact. The primary objective of this mission is to safely recover the mysterious object before a massive catastrophe strikes the world. Accompanying him on this journey is Priyanka Chopra, who plays Mandakini, an historian who is also an exceptional sharpshooter. The narrative takes the characters across diverse global landscapes, including the dense jungles of Africa, the icy terrains of Antarctica, and various scenic European locations. Adding severe friction to this mission is Prithviraj Sukumaran, who essays the role of Khumbha, a formidable antagonist equipped with cutting-edge technology.
Visual Effects and Theatrical Release Date
The film has been developed across multiple elaborate schedules enhanced by grand visual effects. Headlined by Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, Varanasi is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on April 7, 2027. First looks of the primary star cast have already been revealed to the public, sending the excitement levels of fans skyrocketing.
