Iconic Bollywood thriller 'Kaante' is often remembered for its gritty atmosphere, but music composer and lyricist Anand Raj Anand has now shared a surprising revelation about its production. During a recent interaction, he disclosed that the initial plan for 'Kaante' did not include a single song. The filmmakers were convinced that a movie of this nature, focusing on a heist with a mature cast, did not require a musical score. However, it was the direct intervention and creative vision of Sanjay Dutt that ultimately led to the inclusion of the songs that later became chart-topping hits and remain popular among fans today.
The Critical Role Played by Sanjay Dutt
Anand Raj Anand shared that during the early stages of the project, there was simply no scope for music. The primary reason for this, as he explained, was that the film starred actors all over the age of 45 and lacked a leading heroine. The producers were concerned that songs might ruin the narrative intensity. Anand Raj Anand recounted suggesting to Sanjay Gupta that a musical gathering should be arranged, noting that Sanjay Dutt had a deep affinity for Sufi music. It was the track 'Rama Re' that paved the way for music to be integrated into the film, marking a significant departure from the original no-song decision.
Conflict of Vision Between Producer and Lead
The composer further revealed that producer Sanjay Gupta remained skeptical about whether songs would blend with the film's intense vibe. While Gupta struggled to see how the music would fit, Sanjay Dutt was completely confident in the potential of the tracks. When Anand played 'Ishq Samundar' and 'Maahi Ve' for the lead actor, Sanjay Dutt immediately embraced them. He eventually convinced Sanjay Gupta, telling him not to worry and that they would make the songs fit perfectly. This moment of support from the star was the turning point that allowed the music to take shape within the heist drama.
Creating the Iconic Title Track
Discussing the process behind the film's famous title track, Anand Raj Anand shared that Sanjay Gupta specifically requested a theme song that could rival international franchises like 'James Bond' or 'Mission: Impossible'. The composer was given a simple scenario: characters planning a robbery in a cave, smoking, and turning up their collars. Taking inspiration from this, he instantly came up with the line 'Collar ko thoda sa upar...', which became the foundation of the title track. It took Anand roughly a week to complete the song, effectively launching the soundscape for 'Kaante' and adding a layer of style that would become synonymous with the film.
