Bollywood has witnessed several film series that capture the audience's imagination, but few manage to become permanent pop-culture fixtures quite like the Welcome franchise. From iconic character quirks to endless meme material, these comedies have enjoyed enduring popularity on television and streaming platforms alike, drawing viewers no matter how many times they have seen them before.
The 2007 Blockbuster That Started It All
The journey began in 2007 with the release of Welcome, directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Firoz Nadiadwala. The film brought together a stellar ensemble featuring Akshay Kumar, Katrina कैफ, Nana Patekar, and Anil Kapoor. Performances by Anil Kapoor as Majnu Bhai and Nana Patekar as Uday Shetty instantly achieved legendary status, cementing themselves in cinematic history. Holding a 7.2 rating on IMDb, the movie featured memorable music tracks and turned into a massive commercial success. Made on a budget of approximately 32 crore rupees, it crossed the 100 crore rupee mark globally to earn blockbuster status. Audiences can stream it on platforms ranging from JioCinema to YouTube.
Welcome Back and the 2015 Sequel
Capitalizing on the massive goodwill of the original, the makers returned in 2015 with Welcome Back, once again directed by Anees Bazmee. This installment shifted the lead casting, bringing in John Abraham alongside returning fan favorites Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, and Paresh Rawal, while also introducing Shruti Haasan, Dimple Kapadia, and a dual role for Nana Patekar. While it did not match the monumental heights of the predecessor, the sequel performed decently at the box office and was labeled a semi-hit.
Welcome to the Jungle and Its Box Office Run
The third installment, Welcome to the Jungle, arrived in theaters with Ahmed Khan taking over the directorial reins and assembling a massive star cast. The lineup featured Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Sanjay Dutt, Disha Patani, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Johnny Lever, Aftab Shivdasani, Yashpal Sharma, and Kiku Sharda. Certified UA, the movie performed strongly at the ticket counters. It raked in a worldwide box office collection of 192 crore rupees, with domestic earnings accounting for 158 crore rupees, successfully securing a hit verdict. Viewers can catch the film on JioCinema.
