Veteran film and television actor Suresh Oberoi has established a prominent presence in the entertainment industry over several decades. Beyond his successful acting career across movies and television shows, he also stepped into the political arena in 2004 by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, his stint in politics proved short-lived as he soon realized that the political environment did not suit his inner disposition. In a candid interaction with Nidhi Vasandani, the acclaimed actor looked back at his brief foray into public life, revealing how his spiritual guru had sternly warned him against entering politics and how his initial expectations clashed with ground realities.
Initial Entry and Meetings With Top Leadership
Suresh Oberoi recalled that the idea of joining politics first emerged during his student days in Hyderabad. A close friend visited his residence and proposed that he should consider associating himself with the Bharatiya Janata Party. At that point, the actor viewed politics as a completely new domain to explore, wondering what meaningful role he could play and where such a journey might lead him.
By the year 2004, Oberoi formally decided to take the leap into political life alongside his friend. During this period, he had the opportunity to interact directly with senior leaders of the party. He personally met figures such as Lal Krishna Advani and the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. These high-level interactions initially fueled his enthusiasm, making him look forward to serving the nation through political engagement.
Spiritual Guru's Warning and Reprimand
Despite his growing excitement about entering public service, things took a dramatic turn when Suresh Oberoi shared his plans with his spiritual guru. Upon hearing about his decision to join politics, his guru reacted with extreme displeasure and scolded him sternly.
Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Oberoi shared that he had never witnessed his guru reprimand anyone with such severity before. His guru issued a firm warning, advising him in unequivocal terms to stay completely away from politics and politicians. Although the sharp reprimand made a strong impression, the actor initially decided to proceed with his political journey despite the explicit caution.
Internal Disconnect and Disillusionment
Although Suresh Oberoi began his political tenure with considerable energy, his enthusiasm began to dissipate quickly over time. He found that he was not happy from within and that his personal energy was completely out of sync with the political surroundings. His inner conscience did not support his continuation in public office, eventually prompting him to step back and distance himself from active politics.
The actor also highlighted a major shift in his perception regarding the political field. Prior to joining, he believed that the sole objective of entering politics was to serve the nation. However, his direct experiences led him to a different conclusion. He observed that many individuals entered politics not out of a desire for national service, but primarily to generate financial wealth. He carefully clarified that this observation was not a blanket generalization about all politicians, nor was it targeted at any single individual.
Alignment With Senior Leadership Versus Local Reality
Expanding on his political reflections, Suresh Oberoi emphasized that he held no ill will toward top party leadership. He expressed respect for senior figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath, stating that he agreed with their vision and leadership.
However, his primary issue lay with the immediate political environment and the individuals surrounding him at the ground level. Oberoi explained that his personal energy and core ideology failed to align with those around him, as he felt that many of the people he encountered lacked genuine authenticity. This persistent disconnect ultimately convinced him that public office was not his true calling, leading to his permanent exit from the political arena.
