Removal From Indian Idol Season 5
Mathur detailed the events following the conclusion of Indian Idol Season 4. Having successfully hosted the fourth edition, she was scheduled to return as the presenter for Season 5. At the time, she was expecting her second daughter, Saira. Wanting to maintain professional transparency, Mathur informed the production team about her pregnancy right at the start of the fifth season's planning phase.
She explained to the makers that she could comfortably navigate the audition rounds during the early months of her pregnancy. However, she also gave them advance notice that her baby bump would become noticeable on screen by the time the live finale episodes were filmed. Rather than accommodating her condition or planning production around it, the producers responded by asking her to step down from the show immediately.
Regressive Arguments Given by Production Team
Recalling the interaction, Mathur shared that the reasons provided by the show creators were completely unreasonable. The production team claimed that Indian television audiences were not prepared to see a pregnant host on screen. Furthermore, they asserted that a pregnant Video Jockey would not look visually appealing on camera, using this rationale to justify her sudden exclusion.
Expressing her deep disappointment, Mathur pointed out that the decision reflected a narrow mindset that failed to recognize how rapidly society and audiences were evolving. For her, the issue went beyond losing a single television hosting assignment; it highlighted a systemic perception where a woman's pregnancy is viewed as an obstacle to her professional capabilities and career progression.
Rejecting Subsequent Offer for Season 6
Following her departure from the fifth season, the show organizers later approached Mathur with an offer to return as the host for Indian Idol Season 6. However, the experience during her pregnancy had significantly impacted her perspective regarding the working culture of the project. Having lost her initial enthusiasm and trust in the management, she firmly declined the offer to rejoin the franchise.
