When relatives or guests arrive at homes in the rural pockets of Jharkhand, they are greeted with local delicacies rather than expensive sweets like kaju katli. The defining feature of these treats is that they are not only delicious but also easy on the common person's wallet. This unique hospitality tradition has thrived across the countryside, giving local cuisine a distinct identity.
A Wide Variety of Savory Snacks and Fritters
According to local shop operator Mira Gorai, her establishment offers numerous savory items including bread chops, aloo chops, samosas, egg chops, pyaji, and masala chana. Special fritters made from neem leaves and onions are also widely appreciated by the local populace. The rustic taste of these food items resonates deeply with residents of rural areas.
Affordable Snacking for Just 20 Rupees
The greatest advantage of this local cuisine is its affordability. Customers can purchase up to three pieces of snacks for just ₹20, allowing people to buy their preferred items with minimal expenditure. Alongside these savory items, traditional sweets such as laung lata, balushahi, shakarpara, and meethi namkeen are also readily available for those with a sweet tooth.
Hosting Guests on a Small Budget
Mira Gorai explains that when guests visit, locals purchase these items to ensure a warm and proper reception. If 10 to 12 guests arrive at a household, arrangements for the entire family and visitors can be made for approximately ₹200. This demonstrates that hospitality does not require a large budget, and rural traditions prove that genuine warmth matters more than expensive delicacies.
