NorthEast United FC began their Indian Super League campaign in thrilling fashion by defeating defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant 1-0 in their opening match. Played in Guwahati, the encounter saw Jithin MS score a dramatic late winner to secure all three points for his side.
The decisive late strike
The match appeared to be heading towards a stalemate as both defenses held firm throughout regular time. However, Jithin, who was brought onto the pitch at the start of the second half, found the back of the net in the 90+2nd minute to turn the tide and seal the victory.
Early chances and defensive resilience
Both teams displayed attacking intent right from the opening whistle. NorthEast United created a scoring opportunity in the very first minute of the game, but Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith pulled off a brilliant save to deny the hosts an early lead.
The dramatic finish
With regulation time almost over and a draw looking certain, NorthEast United mounted one final attacking wave during injury time. Although Vishal Kaith blocked the initial attempt, the rebound bounced off the goalpost straight into the path of Jithin, who made no mistake in slotting it home.
