Concerns over vehicle safety have triggered the largest recall in Tesla history, centered on the electric automaker's flush electronic door handle design. Safety regulators in China announced the action after determining that the handles can impede emergency exits and hamper rescue operations following collisions. The design has faced severe criticism in both the United States and China, where several families of crash victims have launched legal actions claiming that the door handle mechanisms directly contributed to fatal outcomes during accidents.
Scale of the Massive Chinese Recall
The State Administration for Market Regulation in China officially announced on Friday that the recall encompasses more than 2.9 million vehicles. The action specifically affects Model 3 and Model Y electric cars produced locally in China between 2019 and 2026. This mandate represents the single largest vehicle recall campaign that Tesla has ever encountered in any global market.
Software Updates and Mechanical Emergency Fixes
To address the safety hazards, Tesla is implementing a multi-pronged solution across the affected fleet. Certain vehicles will receive an over-the-air software update engineered to automatically roll down windows immediately after a crash occurs, reducing the risk of occupants becoming trapped inside the cabin. Additionally, many vehicles will require physical warning stickers provided free of charge to vehicle owners. These labels are designed to help passengers quickly locate and operate manual mechanical door release handles during an emergency.
In current production models, these mechanical override handles are often difficult for passengers to identify because their color blends directly into the surrounding interior trim. Operating a physical handle becomes vital during severe collisions when a vehicle's low-voltage battery system experiences failure. While these low-voltage batteries do not supply power to drive the car, they are responsible for operating onboard computers, central touchscreen displays, and electronically activated door latches.
Tesla did not respond to requests for comment regarding the regulatory announcement.
Widespread Impact Across Domestic Chinese Automakers
Tesla is not the only manufacturer subject to regulatory action regarding door handle safety. Chinese authorities simultaneously issued recall orders for over 1 million vehicles produced by eight domestic automotive manufacturers due to similar safety risks linked to flush door handle mechanisms. The affected Chinese companies include Beijing Automotive, Chery, Dongfeng, First Auto Works, Geely, Leapmotor, Xiaomi, and Xpeng.
Driver Monitoring Defects on Imported Tesla Models
In an independent regulatory action, Chinese authorities recalled nearly 50,000 imported Tesla vehicles, including Model 3, Model X, and Model S units brought into the country between 2019 and 2026. Regulators determined that the vehicles possessed inadequate driver monitoring systems when operating assisted steering technology, thereby elevating the overall risk of traffic collisions. While a portion of these imported vehicles can be rectified through remote software adjustments, others will require physical hardware installations of new in-cabin monitoring cameras to verify driver attentiveness.
China Tightens Automotive Regulations While US Inspects
China continues to enforce stringent regulatory oversight on modern automotive technologies. Earlier this year, the Chinese government enacted new rules that will implement a complete ban on fully retractable door handles nationwide. This follows previous regulatory measures established in 2021 that strictly governed autonomous driving technology operations prior to commercial deployment, alongside separate rules establishing rigorous control over data generated by software-defined vehicles.
Meanwhile, road safety regulators in the United States began assessing last month whether new federal rules are necessary to govern electronic door handle designs across the automotive industry.
