Shoppers who prefer contactless payments are about to see a major convenience upgrade at one of the country's biggest retailers. Walmart has officially announced that both its primary retail stores and Sam's Club locations will soon support Tap to Pay, addressing a feature omission that has long frustrated customers accustomed to tapping their phones at checkout counters everywhere else.
Rollout Schedule and Store Timeline
The transition begins on Monday, August 24, at select locations as part of an initial rollout phase. While the feature will debut at a handful of stores on that date, Walmart has confirmed a broader timeline ensuring that every single store across the United States will support Tap to Pay by the end of 2026. Additionally, the company's network of gas stations and fuel locations will receive the upgrade by mid-2027.
Digital Wallet Integration and Payment Choices
Along with traditional contactless credit and debit cards, the upcoming system allows customers to integrate their Walmart, Sam's Club, or OnePay cards directly into their digital wallets. While shoppers can continue using cash, standard credit cards, or the existing Walmart Pay system if they prefer, the addition of universal Tap to Pay brings the retailer in line with modern checkout standards.
Bridging the Gap With Industry Standards
For many regular shoppers, visiting the retail giant meant breaking the muscle memory built at virtually every other modern business that already accepted NFC-based payments. Fumbling with physical cards at POS terminals or accidentally leaving cards stuck in readers will soon be a thing of the past as the new contactless infrastructure becomes available to all customers.
