In a shocking incident of fraud in Panchkula, two impostors posing as medical specialists cheated an elderly couple of Rs 5 lakh after promising effective treatment for cancer. The fraudsters allegedly made a cancer patient inhale an unknown substance to confuse her and her husband, and then intimidated them with a medical syringe to extort the money. Sector-5 Police Station has registered a case based on the victim's complaint and launched an investigation.
Fake Promise of a Mumbai Specialist
According to the police complaint lodged by Sector-10 resident Rajendra Kumar, his wife Renu Gupta is undergoing treatment for cancer in her left arm. Around two months ago, a man named Manoj Mehra, residing on VIP Road, got in touch with him. Manoj claimed that an expert doctor from Mumbai frequently visits Panchkula and could provide advanced treatment for his wife's illness. Manoj then shared the phone numbers of the purported doctor and a few others with the couple, maintaining regular contact over the following weeks to gain their trust and persuade them to undergo local treatment.
Inhalation of Unknown Substance at Home
The situation escalated on the morning of June 25 at around 9:00 AM, when two unidentified men arrived at Rajendra Kumar's residence. Posing as doctors, they initiated a treatment procedure on Renu Gupta. During this medical farce, they reportedly administered an unknown chemical substance for the woman to smell. Rajendra Kumar stated that the substance left both him and his wife in a state of severe disorientation and mental confusion.
Extortion via Syringe Threat
Taking advantage of the couple's impaired state, the impostors threatened them by showing a medical syringe and demanded an immediate payment of Rs 5 lakh. When Rajendra Kumar expressed his inability to arrange such a large sum right away, the perpetrators coerced him under severe pressure until he handed over the cash. After taking the money, the suspects claimed they would return in two days to conduct a follow-up check and fled the scene. Upon regaining full clarity and realizing they had been duped, the elderly couple alerted the authorities at Sector-5 Police Station, who are currently reviewing evidence to identify the culprits.
