Hepatitis has emerged as a major global health threat, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. This severe infection attacks liver cells, often serving as a primary driver of both acute and chronic liver failure. Medical experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have warned that the infection frequently progresses silently for years without presenting noticeable symptoms. Left undiagnosed, it can eventually trigger life-threatening complications such as cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer, making early screening and diagnostic evaluations critical for prevention.
The Global and National Burden of Hepatitis
According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 25.4 crore (254 million) people globally suffer from chronic Hepatitis B, while another 5 crore (50 million) individuals live with Hepatitis C. Worryingly, India is among the top 10 nations that collectively account for nearly two-thirds of the total global hepatitis disease burden.
The situation within India remains particularly severe. Epidemiological projections indicate that nearly 4 crore people in the country are living with chronic Hepatitis B, while between 60 lakh and 1.2 crore individuals suffer from Hepatitis C. Despite these staggering numbers, the vast majority of infected individuals remain unaware of their condition, missing out on timely diagnostic testing and medical treatment.
Over 500 Essential Functions: How Hepatitis Affects the Liver
Highlighting the biological importance of the organ, Prof. Pramod Garg, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at AIIMS, explained that the liver is the body's most vital multifunctional organ. It carries out more than 500 essential bodily tasks, including facilitating digestion, regulating metabolism, filtering out toxic substances, and supporting the immune system.
When inflammation occurs within liver tissue, the medical condition is categorized as hepatitis. This inflammation can present as either short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic). A chronic infection is defined as one that persists for longer than 6 months, slowly damaging the liver structure over time, often completely beneath the surface without displaying clear symptoms.
Symptoms, Transmission Routes, and Viral Strains
Detailing the clinical symptoms, AIIMS gastroenterology expert Prof. Shalimar noted that acute hepatitis typically presents with visible signs such as jaundice, nausea, vomiting, and a loss of appetite. Most patients suffering from acute infections recover fully within 4 to 6 weeks under proper care. However, untreated chronic hepatitis quietly advances to cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer, with many patients only becoming aware of the condition after irreversible organ damage has occurred.
Hepatitis is primarily caused by five main viral strains: A, B, C, D, and E. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption, certain medications, and autoimmune disorders can trigger liver inflammation. Among the viral strains, Hepatitis B and C pose the greatest danger due to their potential for long-term damage. While Hepatitis A and E spread through contaminated food and water supplies, strains B and C transmit through infected blood, unsafe injections or needles, unprotected sexual contact, and transmission from mother to child.
Treatment Advances for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
Discussing therapeutic developments, Prof. Shalimar emphasized that medical treatments for viral hepatitis have improved dramatically in recent years. Chronic Hepatitis B can now be effectively managed and controlled over the long term using specialized antiviral medications.
For Hepatitis C, medical science has achieved a major breakthrough. With a 3-month course of oral medications, more than 95% of Hepatitis C patients can be completely cured. However, doctors caution that if the disease is diagnosed at an advanced stage where organ failure has occurred, a liver transplant remains the only viable option for survival.
Lifestyle Factors and the Escalating Risk of Fatty Liver
Viral infections are no longer the sole threat to liver health across the population. Modern lifestyle shifts, rising obesity rates, diabetes, poor dietary habits, and physical inactivity have led to a sharp increase in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Clinical studies reveal that approximately 38% of Indian adults and 35% of children are currently affected by fatty liver condition. At the same time, excessive alcohol intake continues to be a major contributor to liver cirrhosis and liver failure, highlighting the urgent need for routine health checkups and preventive lifestyle modifications.
