The kaner flower, widely used in religious rituals, is not just a symbol of devotion, it also holds an important place in Ayurveda as an effective medicine. Changing lifestyles have led to a steady rise in health problems, and most people turn to allopathic medicines for relief. Ayurvedic remedies, however, can be just as effective for the body without causing harmful side effects. The kaner flower is one such remedy that also carries deep religious significance in ancient texts.
A flower dear to Shiva and Vishnu
Religious texts describe the kaner flower as one of the most beloved flowers of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Dr Smita Srivastava, an AYUSH physician from Raebareli who holds a BAMS degree from Lucknow University, explains that kaner is also known as peet karvir or the divine flower. According to her, the flower is highly beneficial for health because it is rich in antioxidant properties that help the body in several ways.
Multiple health benefits
The kaner flower is as rich in medicinal properties as it is beautiful to look at. Dr Srivastava says the flower provides relief from headaches, boils and pimples, and toothache. It also helps ease the pain women experience during their periods. People struggling with hair fall are also said to benefit from using the kaner flower.
Toxic, yet effective
Dr Srivastava explains that the kaner flower is toxic in nature, but despite this, it proves extremely beneficial for health. If a person suffers from ringworm, itching or white patches on the skin, applying a paste made from the kaner flower on the affected area brings relief. Drinking a decoction made from the flower also helps ease period pain in women.
What the seeds and leaves contain
The seeds of the kaner flower contain glycosides that act on the heart, along with compounds such as carabin and scopolin. Its leaves contain oleandrin, the main heart-related substance found in the plant. The yellow variety of kaner also contains compounds such as peruboside, which add to its medicinal significance and value in Ayurveda.
