The transfer of six specialist doctors at once from the government BD Pandey District Hospital in Nainital, Uttarakhand, has triggered anger among residents, elected representatives, traders and local organisations, both in the town and in the surrounding hill areas. As soon as the news broke, local people, representatives, traders and social organisations mobilised and began demanding that the government reconsider the decision. Residents say the hill region already suffers from an acute shortage of specialist doctors, and losing this many doctors at once could cripple the hospital's functioning.
The Six Doctors Who Were Transferred
As part of a state-level transfer of doctors, six specialists posted at BD Pandey District Hospital were moved out. They are Senior Medical Officer Dr. Anirudh Gangola, physician Dr. M.S. Dugtal, orthopaedic specialist Dr. Narendra Rawat, ENT specialist Dr. Monika Kandpal, surgeon Dr. V.K. Mishra and pathologist Dr. Mamta Pangti. As soon as word of the simultaneous transfer of all six doctors spread, local public representatives immediately demanded that the orders be cancelled and that vacant posts at the hospital be filled quickly.
Thousands of Patients Depend on This One Hospital
According to local residents, BD Pandey District Hospital is not just Nainital town's hospital, it is the main healthcare centre for thousands of patients from surrounding villages and remote hill areas. Patients come here for OPD consultations, emergency care, surgery and other specialist services. People fear that with fewer doctors available, they may now have to travel to Haldwani or other bigger hospitals for treatment, a journey that is far from easy given the hill terrain.
Trade and Social Bodies Join the Protest
The Nainital Hotel Association, the Maa Nayana Devi Vyapar Mandal, BJP workers and representatives linked to the municipality have all taken note of the issue. These organisations have appealed to the government to reconsider the transfer of the doctors. They say the hospital is already struggling with a shortage of doctors and resources, and that the situation could worsen further if the currently serving doctors are moved out.
MLA Sarita Arya: Postings in Hill Areas Are Already Difficult
MLA Sarita Arya said the six specialist doctors posted at BD Pandey District Hospital had been serving there for a long time and patients were getting real relief because of them. She said posting doctors in a hill region like Nainital has always been a challenge, since many doctors are unwilling to stay posted there for long. Transferring doctors who are already serving there, she said, will only add to the public's difficulties. The MLA said she has spoken to MP Ajay Bhatt on the issue, and the MP has assured her that he will take it up with the Health Minister. Sarita Arya said talks would continue at a higher level to stop the transfers and to strengthen health services at the hospital.
She also questioned the hospital's reclassification from the difficult (durgam) category to the accessible (sugam) category. She said that while the hospital has been placed in the accessible category on paper, the facilities needed by doctors and health workers are still missing on the ground. She pointed out that there is no government residential accommodation for doctors at the hospital, which creates problems for doctors who come from far away.
Hotel Association: Ramsay Hospital Already Shut, Now More Pressure
Nainital Hotel Association president Digvijay Singh Bisht said that after considerable effort, Nainital's health services had got back on track to some extent, and patients were getting better treatment because of the doctors posted there, but now six doctors have been transferred at once. He pointed out that Nainital's Ramsay Hospital has already shut down, which has increased the burden of patients on BD Pandey Hospital. Patients from nearby villages and remote areas also come here for treatment, he said, and a shortage of doctors could lead to serious problems for them. The Hotel Association has demanded that the transfer orders be withdrawn.
Trade Body: Machines Are There, Technicians Are Not
Maa Nayana Devi Vyapar Mandal president Puneet Tandon said Nainital's health facilities are already in a difficult state. He said the hospital does have the necessary machines, but a shortage of technicians means they cannot be used to their full capacity. He said it is essential to provide the facilities needed to post doctors and keep them there. Tandon appealed to the government to immediately reconsider the transfer of the six doctors from BD Pandey District Hospital.
What Happens if the Decision Isn't Reversed
Local residents and organisations say clearly that if the government does not withdraw the transfer order, patients in Nainital town and the surrounding hill areas could face even greater difficulties in getting treatment. For now, all eyes are on what stance the government takes after the talks under way at the MLA and MP level.
