Along countless village roads and farm boundaries across India grows a shrub most passersby dismiss as ordinary wild growth, in fact villagers commonly call it just a jungle plant. Yet this plant, known as Ghaneri, is a multi-purpose medicinal species that holds an important place in Ayurvedic medicine. Its leaves, fruit and bark contain natural compounds credited with easing a surprising range of health problems.
A Remedy Used Since Ancient Times
Ghaneri is far from a new discovery, it has been used to treat various illnesses since ancient times. It behaves like a natural tonic for the body, and regular use is believed to bring multiple health benefits, which is why it also finds a place in several Ayurvedic formulations.
What The Doctor Says
Dr. Vandana Tiwari, a medical officer with five years of experience at the Government Ayurvedic Hospital in Nagar Ballia, says Ghaneri is a genuine medicinal plant, and its fruit, leaves and bark are extremely beneficial and effective for health. According to her, the plant is packed with medicinal properties.
The Nutrients Packed Inside
The Ghaneri plant contains nutrients such as magnesium, sulphur, boron, chlorine, iron, zinc, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, elements that help protect the body from a range of diseases.
Relief From Piles
For piles, a decoction is prepared by taking Ghaneri bark, Amla fruit and red Kachnar in equal amounts. When the resulting brew is mixed with juices such as pomegranate and tamarind and consumed, it brings relief in bleeding piles.
Helps With Bloody Diarrhoea And Dysentery
For bloody diarrhoea and dysentery, fresh Ghaneri fruits are crushed to extract their juice. One teaspoon of this juice is taken 3 to 4 times a day, and continuing this for a few days can stop bloody diarrhoea.
Eases Fever And Headache
Ghaneri is also credited with properties that relieve fever and pain. Grinding its leaves into a paste and applying it on the head is said to reduce the headache caused by fever, along with the burning sensation and heaviness in the head. For fever, 20 to 40 ml of Ghaneri decoction is mixed with sugar or mishri and allowed to cool. Taken morning and evening, it is said to help with severe fever accompanied by burning and excessive thirst. Drinking one teaspoon of Ghaneri fruit juice three times a day is also said to cure fever.
Benefits For Arthritis And Stomach Ailments
For arthritis, a decoction can be made by combining mulethi and Gambhari fruit. Taking 20 to 40 ml of this decoction three times a day is said to benefit rheumatism or arthritis. A 40 ml decoction made from Gambhari root, taken morning and evening, is said to help with stomach ailments. Both remedies are also considered useful for gas formation or intestinal worms.
Never Use It Without Medical Guidance
Despite its long list of benefits, experts caution against consuming Ghaneri casually. It should always be taken under a doctor's supervision and with proper care, since the wrong dosage can turn poisonous.
Taken together, these traditional uses span everything from piles and dysentery to fever, headaches, arthritis and stomach trouble, reflecting why Ghaneri has held such a lasting place in home remedies passed down through generations.
