Incessant and heavy downpours across Himachal Pradesh have severely battered local infrastructure, triggering extensive landslides and placing disaster management authorities on high alert. Within the Solan district, near Kumarhatti along the Baddi-Nalagarh-Ramshahr arterial route, a major landslide has once again completely paralyzed vehicular movement. Continuous precipitation has caused a 100-meter stretch of the roadway to plunge roughly 15 feet downward, prompting the local administration to officially seal off the route to all traffic for public safety.
Authorities noted that a similar severe subsidence occurred at this exact spot during the previous monsoon season, causing extensive damage to the foundation. With renewed heavy rainfall, the situation has escalated, severing connectivity along the Nalagarh-Ramshahr corridor. The landslide debris has also choked the Chikni Khad situated near the Hometown Resort. In anticipation of further hazards, officials ordered the immediate evacuation of a nearby residential structure belonging to Balbir, located directly across from the sunken road, to avert any potential disasters.
Nalagarh Sub-Divisional Magistrate Narendra Ahluwalia stated that the ground had previously settled at this location, but the fresh drop reached nearly 15 feet. Ahluwalia confirmed that field teams are closely monitoring the unfolding situation and that public works department and disaster response personnel will inspect the site to formulate a restoration plan.
Meanwhile, the Dehradun-Chandigarh National Highway running through the Sirmaur district has suffered severe structural damage due to relentless monsoon rains, rendering travel hazardous. The deterioration of large segments of the highway has created a highly vulnerable roadbed where the passage of heavy commercial vehicles could trigger catastrophic collapses. Consequently, district officials enforced strict traffic restrictions.
To mitigate the immense vehicular load and eliminate accident risks, authorities instituted a temporary diversion strategy barring multi-axle trucks, tippers, and dumpers from the national highway. All heavy commercial freight carriers are now being rerouted through Khizrabad in neighboring Haryana via the state's border checkpoints.
In a separate grim incident within the Kangra district, heavy overnight rain proved disastrous for a resident of Jada village under the Baruhi gram panchayat in the Nurpur legislative constituency. Mangoo Ram was asleep inside his dwelling when the structure suddenly began to fracture. Alerted by falling bricks and snapping timbers, he managed to sprint outside just seconds before the entire building pancaked into a pile of rubble.
Reflecting on the catastrophe, Mangoo Ram explained that his daily necessities and livelihood supplies are buried deep beneath the wreckage, leaving him without shelter or food. He noted that he lives alone, belongs to a below-poverty-line household, and earns a living through daily wage labor. Although a housing grant was sanctioned under a premier national rural housing scheme and the initial installment was deposited into his bank account, his extreme financial destitution prevented him from finishing the construction.
Panchayat Vice-President Pikan Dhiman corroborated the details, emphasizing the victim's impoverished status and solitary living conditions, while urging the government to extend immediate relief. Nurpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Arun Sharma stated that rescue teams were promptly dispatched upon receiving word of the collapse, and local representatives are coordinating emergency food and shelter arrangements for the displaced resident.
