A notable political figure from Himachal Pradesh has passed away. Ram Ratan Sharma, who served two terms as a member of the legislative assembly from the Barsar constituency in Hamirpur district, breathed his last on Sunday at his residence located in Mehre. He was 80 years old, and family sources confirmed that the senior leader passed away in the morning hours, leaving behind a legacy of active public service.
Legislative Career and Representation
Ram Ratan Sharma had an established political career in the region. He represented the Barsar constituency as an elected representative during two separate terms, winning the mandate in 1985 and subsequently in 1990. Throughout his active years in electoral politics, he worked closely with local constituents and contributed to the developmental initiatives of the area.
Spiritual and Cultural Involvement
Beyond his legislative duties, Sharma was widely recognized for his service towards religious and cultural institutions in Hamirpur. He played a prominent role in the upkeep and administration of the well-known Baba Balak Nath temple at Diyotashid, having served in the capacity of both a trustee and a priest. Furthermore, he was an active participant in the Ram Janmabhumi movement. During the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992, he was present at the site and brought back a brick from the location.

Several prominent political figures expressed grief over his demise. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu shared a message on X, stating that the news of the passing of the former MLA was extremely unfortunate and prayed for peace to the departed soul. The current MLA from Barsar, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, also paid tribute on social media, highlighting Sharma's leading role in the temple construction movement as well as his contributions to the promotion of yoga, which aimed at fostering a healthy and aware society.
Final Rites and Attendance
The final rites of Ram Ratan Sharma were attended by a large gathering of supporters, local residents, and political leaders. Current MLA Inder Dutt Lakhanpal joined the procession and shouldered the bier to offer a final farewell. Other prominent attendees included former MLA Manjit Singh Dogra, Zilla Parishad Vice President Gurdeep Singh, and Barsar BJP Mandal President Sanjeev Kumar, alongside local police personnel who were present at the cremation site.
