Political tensions flared up in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, reported a disturbance outside his Kolkata residence. He squarely blamed rival party workers for the incident, asserting that this marks the seventh attempt on his life over the past six months. Taking to the social media platform X, he shared several video clips capturing the chaos and questioned the local administration and law enforcement for their inaction.
Clashes Erupt During Birthday Night
The confrontation began late at night during birthday celebrations outside the MP's home located at 121, Kalighat in south Kolkata, where workers from the ruling party and their political opponents gathered and clashed. Around 2:30 AM, a group of individuals started shouting slogans and tore down banners and cutouts bearing his likeness. When supporters attempted to intervene, physical pushing and shoving ensued, leaving multiple people injured in the scuffle.
MP Sits Outside Until Dawn
Following the escalation, Abhishek Banerjee stepped out of his residence to assess the situation. The crowd outside responded with renewed sloganeering right in front of police personnel, leading to a prolonged face-off between the rival groups. The MP remained seated outside his premises from 2:45 AM until 6:00 AM as the standoff persisted through the early morning hours.
