Commuters navigating the challenging mountainous terrain of Himachal Pradesh are set to receive major transit relief. The state has finalized arrangements to commence regular helicopter operations from the Sanjauli heliport in Shimla to Rampur, extending onward to the tribal center of Reckong Peo. Scheduled to begin on 21 October 2026, the newly approved aerial route aims to dramatically slash transit times between high-altitude settlements and the state capital, transforming what is typically an arduous multi-hour road journey into a swift flight.
Weekly Flight Schedule and Operational Timings
Under the finalized timetable, the helicopter operation will run three days per week, specifically on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The morning service will take off from Sanjauli at 9:55 AM, touching down at Rampur within thirty-five minutes at 10:30 AM. After a brief halt, the aircraft will depart Rampur at 10:50 AM, reaching Reckong Peo at 11:25 AM.
The return schedule has been planned with equal precision. The helicopter will leave Reckong Peo at 11:30 AM to land back in Rampur at 12:05 PM. From Rampur, the final leg will depart at 12:10 PM, concluding its journey at Sanjauli heliport at 12:45 PM. This synchronized schedule offers residents in far-flung pockets the practical possibility of reaching Shimla before noon, completing essential medical, administrative, or commercial tasks, and returning home rapidly.
Community Outreach Behind the Air Link
The roll-out of this air corridor stems directly from public commitments made by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during his tour of the Rampur area in Shimla district. During his interactions with local residents, Sukhu reviewed the recurring logistical bottlenecks faced by families residing in remote valleys, especially during seasonal disruptions caused by rain, snow, and landslides. Recognizing that reliable transit is a basic necessity for remote hill communities, the Chief Minister pledged to establish direct air connectivity between Sanjauli and Rampur.
Acting on administrative instructions, Pawan Hans Limited submitted a request to commence helicopter sorties along the Shimla-Rampur corridor under the central government's regional connectivity initiative, the UDAN scheme. State representatives noted that this operational link introduces a dependable secondary transport channel, alleviating travel hardships and providing critical support during medical emergencies.
Broader Network Under UDAN 5.1
The expansion between Sanjauli, Rampur, and Reckong Peo forms part of a wider aviation overhaul across the state. Under the UDAN 5.1 regional connectivity framework, routes interconnecting Shimla, Rampur, Reckong Peo, Kullu, Manali, Mandi, and Chandigarh were allocated to aviation operators Heritage Aviation and Pawan Hans Limited.
At present, Heritage Aviation oversees flights across the Shimla-Reckong Peo, Shimla-Kullu-Shimla, and Chandigarh-Mandi via Kullu sectors. Concurrently, Pawan Hans Limited manages a thrice-weekly helicopter link between Sanjauli in Shimla and Chandigarh. This multi-corridor blueprint is gradually tying together Himachal Pradesh's prime administrative, economic, and tourism hubs with regional urban centers across northern India.
State Subsidies and Viability Gap Funding
Maintaining air operations over rugged mountain routes demands substantial public investment, which the state administration continues to shoulder. Under the state regional connectivity framework, 9 additional flights operate every week, backed by a 100 percent Viability Gap Funding (VGF) subsidy covered entirely by the state exchequer.
The state government spends approximately Rs 35.70 lakh every month to sustain these essential flights. These persistent budgetary commitments have succeeded in locking in air connectivity between Shimla and Chandigarh across six days of the week. By offsetting high operating expenses, the administration seeks to ensure that geographical isolation does not deprive residents of swift regional transportation when they need it most.
