The threat of swine flu has once again turned lethal in Himachal Pradesh, registering the state's second death due to the viral infection. The latest tragedy unfolds in Shimla, where an elderly patient undergoing medical treatment at a prominent government healthcare facility succumbed to multiple complications, prompting renewed alerts from health officials.
Patient Fatality at IGMC Shimla
A 64-year-old patient lost his battle with illness while admitted to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla. The deceased has been identified as Ramashish Ram, a resident of Sai Dobha under the Bilaspur Sadar post office jurisdiction. Hospital records indicate that Ramashish had been admitted to the medical facility on August 13, 2026, where continuous medical care was being administered to stabilize his deteriorating health.
Infection Detection and Underlying Complications
During the course of his hospitalisation, doctors conducted diagnostic tests for the influenza virus, which returned positive for swine flu on August 29. Despite aggressive medical interventions, the patient's physical condition remained critically fragile even prior to the detection of the viral infection, as he was battling several overlapping health disorders simultaneously.
Medical Assessment of the Cause of Death
Providing details on the clinical background, IGMC Medical Superintendent Dr. Rahul Rao stated that the patient was suffering from a severe pre-existing chronic lung ailment alongside pneumonia and acute breathing difficulties. The patient passed away during treatment on Sunday at approximately 6:46 AM. Dr. Rao clarified that because the individual was already grappling with multiple severe medical complications, swine flu alone cannot be solely attributed as the direct cause of death.
Health Advisory and Precautionary Measures
In the wake of this fatality, the hospital administration has strongly urged the public to remain vigilant regarding symptoms associated with swine flu. Citizens experiencing high fever, persistent coughing, sore throat, or respiratory distress have been advised to seek immediate medical consultation. Special caution has been recommended for elderly individuals and those suffering from pre-existing pulmonary conditions or other severe chronic illnesses.
Statewide Statistics and Current Tally
Authorities have emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures, such as exercising caution in crowded public spaces, properly covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, and strictly adhering to prescribed medical treatments. Notably, this follows an earlier fatality where a resident of Sundernagar passed away in Chandigarh due to swine flu. Across Himachal Pradesh, a total of 10 swine flu cases have been reported so far, comprising four patients at IGMC Shimla, four at Tanda Medical College, and two cases registered in Mandi district.
