A horrifying incident of canine aggression unfolded in the Shankli neighbourhood of Shimla on Sunday afternoon, leaving a twenty-month-old infant critically injured. The toddler was playing just outside her house when two ferocious stray dogs suddenly pounced on her. The animals dragged the screaming child between 20 to 30 metres away from her courtyard, biting and clawing her fragile body before frantic family members and neighbours managed to intervene.
Mother Rushes Out to Desperate Cries, Scatters Animals With Stones
The terrifying attack took place around 2 PM on Sunday while the child's mother was washing clothes inside the residence. Piercing cries from the courtyard prompted the mother to drop her chores and rush outside, where she was confronted by a nightmarish scene. The two dogs were violently savaging the tiny child several metres away. Alerted by her distress calls, neighbours gathered quickly and hurled stones at the aggressive animals, eventually forcing them to release the girl. Family members noted that even a fraction of a minute's delay in reaching the spot could have resulted in fatal consequences.
Severe Injuries Across Face and Throat, Twenty Stitches Administered at IGMC
The infant sustained traumatic bite lacerations across multiple parts of her body. The attack targeted her head, regions near the ears, neck, chest, abdomen, arms, and throat, with particularly deep gashes inflicted on her face and neck area. She was immediately rushed to the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla for urgent medical care. Attending doctors at the medical facility had to administer approximately 20 stitches to dress and repair the deep wounds. Thanks to the prompt rescue and rapid emergency intervention, medical staff were able to stabilise the child and save her life.
Distraught Relatives Arrive From Dehradun Amid Mounting Public Anxiety
Upon receiving news of the traumatic ordeal, several family members rushed to Shimla from Dehradun in tears. Seeing the toddler heavily bandaged in the hospital ward left the entire family deeply shaken and fearful. Relatives have pleaded with municipal authorities to take decisive action against dangerous strays roaming residential pockets to ensure no other child endures such trauma. The incident has once again brought Shimla's canine management troubles to the forefront, reminding locals of similar recent incidents in Sanjauli where aggressive stray packs attacked pedestrians.
Mayor Pledges Action, Aggressive Dogs to Be Shifted to Tutikandi Shelter
Acknowledging the gravity of the Shankli attack, the Mayor of Shimla stated that municipal authorities are treating the situation with high priority. The mayor announced that dedicated dog huts have been constructed at Tutikandi, and arrangements are being mobilised to round up vicious dogs from residential colonies and relocate them there. The municipal chief also pointed out that the routine sterilisation drive across the city remains active, promising that all necessary administrative measures will be enforced to prevent further attacks.
