Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are searching for a new director to lead the next entry in the long-running dinosaur franchise following the unexpected departure of Gareth Edwards. Edwards, who brought Jurassic World Rebirth to the big screen, stepped down from the upcoming sequel due to creative differences. Despite his exit, the studio is moving forward with plans for the next chapter, with principal photography targeted to begin as early as 2027.
Director Shake-Up Following Box Office Success
The decision comes shortly after Jurassic World Rebirth achieved impressive commercial success globally, generating $872 million at the worldwide box office. Serving as the seventh feature film in the 33-year-old franchise that originated with Steven Spielberg's iconic 1993 movie, the project proved that audience appetite for prehistoric action remains strong. Studio representatives acknowledged the departure with an appreciative statement, noting, "We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth." Rather than continuing with another massive studio franchise, Edwards plans to focus his energy on original filmmaking projects, returning to non-IP storytelling where he previously created standalone science-fiction works like The Creator.
Core Cast and Writer Confirmed to Return
While the production team seeks a new filmmaker to take the helm, the upcoming sequel retains its core creative continuity behind and in front of the camera. Franchise veteran screenwriter David Koepp is penning the screenplay for the next installment. Additionally, key cast members Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are all set to reprise their roles after anchoring the Rebirth storyline. The studio will need to secure a new director swiftly to keep pace with the proposed 2027 production schedule, making Edwards' successor the sixth director to lead a feature film in the history of the saga.
