Netflix has greenlit a full reunion movie built around the original cast of the British comedy The Inbetweeners, bringing Will, Simon, Jay and Neil back together for the first time in over a decade.
From four-star farewell to a fresh chapter
When The Inbetweeners 2 arrived in 2014, it closed out the story of four awkward teenage friends with a four-star send-off that hinted the door was never really shut on more adventures. That prediction has now come true: the sitcom created by Iain Morris and Damon Beesley is returning as a reunion film at Netflix, with the entire original gang expected to be part of it.
A deal years in the making
The show's rights holder, Banijay U.K., signaled last October that it had struck an agreement with Morris and Beesley, describing it as something that
paves the way for the return of the hit comedy title. Since then, speculation has swirled that lead actors Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison would reprise their roles as Will, Simon, Jay and Neil respectively for new material. It is worth stressing that the actors' individual deals have not been officially finalised, even as the project itself is confirmed to be moving ahead at Netflix.
A franchise built over a decade
The Inbetweeners is more than a one-off show at this point. It ran across three television seasons before spinning off into two successful feature films, and it even spawned an American remake that fans largely prefer to forget. Along the way it produced enduring cultural references, from the Pussay Patrol to the bus wankers jokes to the ooh, friend line, all of which have kept the show alive in meme culture long after it left screens.
Grown-up Inbetweeners, still cringing
The four leads are now in their late 30s and early 40s, a detail that adds a different kind of comedy to the premise, watching characters once defined by teenage humiliation navigate full-on adulthood instead. There is no confirmation yet of when production will begin, what the plot will involve, or whether every original cast member beyond the core four will return, but the nostalgia factor alone has fans speculating. Ideas floated include Simon finally settling down with Carly, Will swapping his briefcase for a messenger bag, Neil turning towards philosophy, and Jay finally guiding his fictional football club Woking from the Conference all the way to the Champions League.
None of that has been confirmed, but with Netflix now attached and the original stars expected to return, the reunion has moved from rumour to reality.
