India is marking four significant years of the historic cheetah project today. Amidst the daily news updates from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh covering major cities like Bhopal, Ujjain, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg, the milestone achieved in wildlife conservation stands out as a major point of discussion. The initiative continues to draw immense national attention as conservationists monitor the growth and adaptation of the wild cats in their new Indian habitats.
The Historic Beginning From Namibia
The ambitious restoration project officially commenced on September 17, 2022, when the very first batch of cheetahs was flown in from Namibia and released into Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park. Following this initial translocation, additional cheetahs were brought to India from South Africa. The primary objective behind this large-scale restoration initiative is to successfully re-establish a viable and self-sustaining population of the species within the country after decades of absence.
Total Cheetah Population Rises to 52
Over the course of these four years, the country has witnessed a steady and encouraging growth in the overall cheetah numbers. According to the latest figures, the total population of cheetahs in India has now increased to 52. Out of this total count, 32 cheetahs have been born on Indian soil itself, while 20 were brought from African nations. Madhya Pradesh has firmly established itself as the primary stronghold and home for these magnificent felines.
Distribution Across Kuno and Gandhi Sagar
At present, the majority of the population resides in Madhya Pradesh, with Kuno National Park housing 49 cheetahs, while an additional 3 cheetahs are housed in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. The overarching project involves continuous, round-the-clock monitoring of the animals, regular health check-ups, and the careful management of their natural habitats by expert wildlife officials and veterinarians to ensure their long-term survival and seamless adaptation.
