For quite some time now, there has been widespread speculation online that the era of comic book films is nearing its end. However, Marvel Studios appears to be taking a different approach by introducing a character from the deepest corners of its archives: Nova. Fresh reports indicate that Michael Waldron, the creator and lead writer of Loki, is currently developing a Nova feature film for Marvel Studios. The intention is for Waldron to pen the script, and there is also a distinct possibility that he will step into the director's chair for the MCU debut of the character famously known as Richard Rider.
The Evolution of the Nova Project
This is not the first instance where an entrance for the super-strong, flying, injury-resistant hero has been proposed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Back in 2022, there were serious discussions involving Moon Knight writers room contributor Sabir Pirzada to adapt the lesser-known comic character into his own television series, though those plans officially stalled last year. Momentum shifted recently when a leak of Michael Waldron's WGA card surfaced, highlighting a Nova project in his development pipeline. Following this, further investigation has confirmed that the writer behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the recently acclaimed Disney+ comedy Chad Powers is actively pitching a fresh, feature-length interpretation of Nova to the leadership at Marvel.
What to Expect from Nova
It is crucial to note that the production has not received an official greenlight from the studio at this stage. Nevertheless, the ongoing interest from Kevin Feige regarding the Nova character is undeniable, and bringing someone of Waldron's stature and proven track record with Marvel into the fold is a very encouraging development. Richard Rider’s comic book origins revolve around an ordinary teenager who is randomly abducted from Earth to serve as a high-powered member of the space police. Because Rider’s personality was intentionally crafted with a witty, nerdy charm modeled after Peter Parker—a character who has long since matured by the time we reach the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day—it seems like the perfect moment for the MCU to expand its horizon and go full super Nova.
