A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Rajasthan's capital, Jaipur, where a family's anticipation for the upcoming Raksha Bandhan festival turned into profound grief. Two young siblings who had gone out to play in Dariyawali Gali near Sadwa Mod, situated within the Jaisinghpura Khor police station limits, drowned after falling into an open, rainwater-filled pit dug for the foundation of a house under construction. The deceased children have been identified as an 11-year-old girl and her 7-year-old younger brother. The tragic loss of two innocent lives has sent waves of shock and sorrow throughout the neighborhood.
Siblings Trap in Waterlogged Pit While Playing Near Home
According to police reports, 11-year-old Alia and her 7-year-old brother Mohammad Ayan had stepped out of their home on Thursday afternoon to play in the vicinity. As they played, they casually walked onto a neighboring residential plot where private building construction was taking place. Local authorities noted that heavy earth-moving machinery (JCB) had been deployed on the property on Wednesday to excavate deep foundation trenches for the upcoming building structure. Torrential rains in the region subsequently caused these open, excavated pits to fill up completely with deep water. While playing around the edge of the pit, the children lost their balance and slipped into the flooded cavity. Moments later, a passerby noticed the children submerged in the muddy water and immediately raised an alarm, bringing a large crowd of local residents rushing to the scene.
Father Spots Children's Slippers Floating on Water Surface
Around 2 PM, the children's father, Liyakat Hussain, left his home to head for his daily job. Upon walking through the lane, he encountered an unusually large gathering of neighbors surrounding the construction site. Curious to inspect the disturbance, he approached the excavated plot and peered into the water-filled pit, only to spot his children's shoes floating on the water's surface. Distraught, the father wasted no time and immediately plunged into the water alongside helpful neighbors to pull both children out of the pit. Hearing the commotion, panic-stricken family members rushed to the spot in tears.
CPR Attempts Fail as Doctors Declare Both Children Deceased
Upon extracting the children from the waterlogged pit, family members and bystanders frantically tried to revive them by administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) right at the site. They then rushed both siblings to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. However, examining physicians at the hospital confirmed the tragic news, declaring both children dead on arrival. Police officers promptly arrived at the location, took custody of the bodies, and transported them to the SMS Hospital for formal post-mortem examinations. Following completion of the legal procedures, the bodies were handed over to the grieving family for burial rites.
Severe Safety Negligence Alleged as Police Launch Inquiry
The victim's family originally belongs to Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh. The father, Liyakat Hussain, works as a daily-wage laborer in Jaipur to support his wife and children. The devastating loss of both young children right before Raksha Bandhan has left the household utterly destroyed, with the parents inconsolable. The father expressed anger over safety lapses, alleging that despite rainwater repeatedly pooling in the exposed foundation trenches, the property owner and contractors failed to erect barricades, place warning signs, or drain the standing water. Officials at the Jaisinghpura Khor police station have registered the case and launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
