Nearly ten years after Pixar brought audiences to tears with its animated musical fantasy, details have emerged regarding the upcoming sequel to the emotional story. The original film introduced audiences to young Miguel as he journeyed into the Mexican Land of the Dead on a musical adventure. Following the official announcement in 2025 that a second installment was officially in development, new story elements and concept artwork were unveiled during the D23 Expo event held in Anaheim, California.
Teenage Miguel and the Return of a Formidable Villain
The preview artwork showcases a grown-up Miguel, now navigating his teenage years complete with an updated hairstyle. His journey will once again take him into the realm of the deceased, where familiar dangers await. The story brings back the primary antagonist from the first movie, the scheming crooner Ernesto de la Cruz. Actor Benjamin Bratt will return to lend his voice to the character once more. Speaking on stage at the D23 Expo, Bratt teased the audience by asking if they remembered his character and remarked, "I can't wait to bring my character back to death." He further explained that the villain will be seeking vengeance in the new storyline.
Release Timeline and Expectations for the Animated Sequel
Fans will have to wait a considerable amount of time before seeing the next chapter unfold on the big screen. The sequel is scheduled for a theatrical release in 2029.
