Drawing Inspiration From Classic Creature Features
This is certainly not the first time Aardman has crafted an affectionate homage to classic monster features, following the 2005 Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit. However, Beast tackles distinct reference points compared to Were-Rabbit, drawing heavily on the vibrant, acid-bright palettes of Scooby-Doo, Goosebumps, and even incorporating a touch of Ghostbusters. Co-director Steve Cox notes that while adapting Hammer horror, Universal Monsters, and traditional gothic atmospheres into a child-friendly format is challenging, the slightly quirky action-adventures of the 1980s provided a playful pathway to make it work.
Balancing Scares With Family-Friendly Fun
The core objective remains keeping Shaun The Sheep accessible to viewers of all generations, introducing younger audiences to a genre they can grow to love. Co-director Matthew Walker explains that the creative team carefully balanced enjoying horror tropes without genuinely terrifying viewers. Consequently, the titular Beast draws stylistic inspiration from 1980s music icon Tina Turner. Cox describes it as resembling a large walking mullet, while Walker adds that although characters within the story mistake the creature for Bigfoot, the creators deliberately gave him a completely unique visual identity.
