Traditional disaster cinema has long relied on cosmic collisions, freezing temperatures, alien forces, or burning skyscrapers to terrorize audiences on the big screen. However, Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu is taking a radically different approach with his upcoming movie Digger. Rather than pointing to external threats, the story frames humanity itself as the primary force of destruction, placing Hollywood star Tom Cruise right at the center of a self-inflicted environmental crisis.
A Fresh Take on the Disaster Genre
Throughout cinema history, disaster narratives have depicted humanity struggling against catastrophic events like asteroids, sinking ships, or climate shifts. Iñárritu reframes this dynamic entirely. Speaking about the core concept of Digger, the director noted that the catastrophic threat does not stem from a comet, an earthquake, or an alien invasion, but rather from human actions themselves. He explained that while standard disaster films explore what happens when something terrible strikes humanity, Digger poses a far simpler yet disturbing question about what occurs when humanity happens to humanity.
Tom Cruise as Oil Tycoon Digger Rockwell
In this narrative, Tom Cruise steps into an unfamiliar role as Digger Rockwell, a powerful oil tycoon. The plot follows Rockwell after he inadvertently triggers an ecological catastrophe, leaving him with the daunting task of attempting to repair the immense damage he has caused. The character is designed to embody both the finest and most destructive traits of human nature. Iñárritu highlighted that the narrative revolves around three foundational forces: grief, power, and responsibility, using imagination to help audiences recognize themselves within real-world realities.
Iñárritu’s Track Record and Release Details
Iñárritu has previously pushed top Hollywood actors into extreme emotional and physical territories to critical acclaim. He directed Michael Keaton through an existential crisis in Birdman and placed Leonardo DiCaprio in a brutal survival scenario in The Revenant, with both films securing Oscar wins. In Digger, Cruise is joined by an impressive ensemble cast that includes Sandra Hüller and Riz Ahmed. Audiences will be able to experience this environmental disaster story when Digger opens in UK cinemas starting October 2.
