The cinematic journey into the fantastical realm of Hyrule has secured its central antagonist. Director Wes Ball's upcoming live-action adaptation of Nintendo and Sony's iconic video game franchise, The Legend of Zelda, has officially cast Australian actor Uli Latukefu to play the villainous warlock king, Ganondorf. This major casting development follows the announcement over a year ago that young actors Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth were selected to portray Princess Zelda and the courageous protagonist Link, as well as an official first look revealed approximately nine months ago.
Multi-Picture Deal Hints at Extended Franchise Plans
Latukefu has reportedly agreed to a multi-picture contract for his portrayal of Ganondorf. This multi-film agreement strongly indicates that the initial cinematic trip to Hyrule will not be a standalone entry, giving weight to ongoing expectations that Ball is building a planned Zelda movie trilogy. Standing at six feet five inches with an imposing physical presence, Latukefu brings substantial screen authority to the all-powerful dark sorcerer. His previous acting portfolio includes playing a college-aged Dwayne Johnson in Young Rock, alongside roles in Alien: Covenant, Black Adam, Next Goal Wins, and MaXXXine.
Late Sam Neill Leads Additional Cast Announcements
Alongside the main antagonist, three prominent actors have also joined the ensemble cast. Most notably, the project features late New Zealand actor Sam Neill in what will mark his final appearance on the big screen. Although Neill's specific character details remain undisclosed, he is joined by Severance actor Dichen Lachman, who is expected to portray an advisor to Princess Zelda. Additionally, The Handmaid’s Tale star Yvonne Strahovski has joined the production in a role described as a queen or queen-like figure.
Theatrical Debut Set for May 2027
With its primary trio of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf now established alongside a strong supporting cast, production continues to move forward toward its global debut. Audiences can expect to experience Latukefu's portrayal of Ganondorf and pay tribute to Sam Neill's final performance when The Legend of Zelda arrives in movie theaters on May 7, 2027.
