In a major development regarding counter-terrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces have achieved a significant breakthrough. According to official reports, Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Zakir Gani was killed during an encounter in the Chanapora area of the Shopian district. The engagement commenced after security personnel heard gunfire from the location, which prompted an immediate and decisive response. Following the exchange of fire, the body of the terrorist was recovered and subsequently identified as Zakir Gani.

According to authorities, Zakir Gani was actively plotting a major terrorist incident. During the search of the encounter site, security forces seized a substantial quantity of weapons and ammunition. This operation was carried out as a joint effort by the Indian Army's Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Security forces had initiated operations in Shopian on Saturday, acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of a terrorist in the area.

Regarding the profile of the neutralized terrorist, officials stated that Zakir Gani was a native of Kulgam. He had joined the ranks of the Lashkar-e-Taiba in 2024. In the security forces' internal 'hit list', he was classified as an A+++ category terrorist. Extensive search operations are currently underway in the region to ensure that no other militants remain in hiding and to secure the area completely.

The anti-terror operation, which began following precise intelligence about the presence of militants in Saidapora village of Shopian, has now entered its fifth day. Security forces have cordoned off the entire region and are continuing their sweep. Addressing the encounter, the Jammu and Kashmir Police stated on their X handle, "You can run, but you cannot hide! SOG Shopian, in a joint operation with RR and CRPF, has neutralized a Lashkar terrorist." Additionally, investigations are ongoing into the recovery of pistols made in Turkey and China during operations in Kashmir. In a separate incident, 9 people, including 8 personnel, were injured after a CISF bus skidded off the road in Reasi.
