For those passionate about gardening, transforming your home or garden with the vibrant blooms of Bougainvillea does not have to be an expensive affair. You can easily propagate new plants at home without spending money on nursery-bought saplings. Kanishk Kumar, a nursery operator based in Jamui, highlights that the monsoon season is the most suitable time for grafting and planting cuttings to produce fresh Bougainvillea plants.
The Ideal Season for Propagation
According to Kanishk Kumar, the window between July and September is perfect for developing new plants. The high humidity levels in the atmosphere during this period provide the necessary environment for cuttings to take root quickly. Furthermore, plants tend to grow faster during the monsoon, which significantly increases the success rate of propagation.
Preparation and Soil Mix
To begin, select a healthy Bougainvillea plant and cut a few sturdy stems, then plant them in bags filled with a well-prepared soil mixture. Kanishk emphasizes that the quality of the soil is crucial for root development. The ideal blend consists of 40 percent common loam soil, 30 percent well-decomposed cow manure, 20 percent river sand, and 10 percent coco peat or coconut husk fiber. If coco peat is unavailable, dried leaf compost serves as an effective substitute. This composition ensures the soil retains moisture effectively while supporting rapid root growth.
Essential Care and Maintenance
After planting the cuttings, it is important to protect them from harsh, direct sunlight. Avoid the common mistake of overwatering the cuttings; you do not need to water them heavily every day. Only apply a light splash of water when the top layer of the soil feels dry, as excess moisture can lead to root rot. With the right technique, you should notice new buds emerging within 30 to 45 days. Typically, a plant becomes fully established in two to three months. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy your gardening hobby while avoiding the cost of purchasing individual plants that often retail for around 350 rupees.
