Within a span of few weeks, this vegetation becomes so dense that even pathways get completely covered. If these weeds are not cleared in time, they can pose serious trouble not only for agricultural productivity but also for human safety and security.
Agricultural scientist Dr. J. B. Singh from Krishi Vigyan Kendra Sultanpur explains that during the rainy season, snakes, scorpions, and other venomous creatures easily conceal themselves within thick patches of grass. Walking along farm ridges or working inside agricultural fields under such conditions can be extremely risky, which is why farmers and residents must always exercise caution during this period.
This issue is not restricted to agricultural lands alone. During the rainy season, grass grows aggressively in front of houses, lanes, empty plots, and surrounding localities. Such spots become secure breeding and hiding grounds for snakes and scorpions, making regular cleaning around residential areas absolutely vital for safety.
Incidents of venomous creatures emerging out of hiding tend to increase significantly during the monsoons. When surrounded by dense grass, these creatures remain hidden from view and can cause sudden harm. Therefore, removing unnecessary vegetation from time to time is a crucial safety measure.
According to Dr. J. B. Singh, wherever necessary, weedicide chemicals can be utilized to control unwanted grass and weeds. This application causes the grass to dry up quickly and drastically reduces the likelihood of its re-growth in the near future.
For effective weed control, a proper solution of glyphosate can be prepared. This is done by mixing ten milliliters of glyphosate into one liter of water and spraying the mixture over unwanted grass. This causes the weeds to wither and halts their further growth entirely.
Glyphosate is a non-selective weedicide chemical. Consequently, it must never be sprayed directly onto paddy or any other standing crop. If the spray drifts onto the main crop, it can severely damage the plants. While spraying, one must always keep track of wind direction and the surrounding crops.
Throughout the rainy season, people should regularly clear out grass and weeds from fields, ridges, homes, and nearby areas. Avoid stepping into dense grassy patches without proper inspection, and always wear sturdy shoes while working in the fields. Regular cleaning and timely weed management can significantly minimize the threat posed by snakes and scorpions.
