Monsoon mayhem in Arunachal: IAF helicopter pulls four marooned people from Sisiri River island, toll at 3

Relentless monsoon showers continued to unleash destruction across Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, with authorities mounting relief operations in multiple districts. Flooding and landslides have battered roads, bridges and homes, taken lives, and snapped connectivity across at least 12 districts of the state. In Lower Dibang Valley district, an IAF helicopter today airlifted four people who had been marooned on an island in the Sisiri River in the Dambuk area, bringing them to safety. The torrential rainfall has also inflicted severe damage on the Roing-Anini road in Lower Dibang Valley, with flash floods sweeping away road sections and bridges at several points along the route. In Anjaw district, an excavator operator is feared to have died after a massive boulder crushed the machine he was working on during highway construction near Sarti village on the route towards Walong, late last night.

Delhi logs hottest morning in two years; IMD gives 5-6 day window for monsoon to reach northern states

The India Meteorological Department said on Sunday that the southwest monsoon is set to push further into several northern states over the coming five to six days, with weather conditions growing increasingly favourable for its advance. The announcement came even as Delhi, the national capital, recorded its warmest morning in approximately two years — a telling sign of the strain that the monsoon's prolonged delay has placed on the region. Uttar Pradesh has equally been wrestling with punishing heat through this extended dry stretch, and both states now await the season's overdue arrival with mounting anticipation.

Home Minister Amit Shah telephones Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, pledges Centre's full backing for flood relief

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday telephoned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take stock of the flooding affecting several parts of the state, with officials confirming that Shah gave the Chief Minister an assurance of the Centre's wholehearted support in managing the emergency. During the call, Shah made specific enquiries about the scale of destruction wrought by rivers that have breached their banks, the officials added. Posting on social media after the conversation, Sarma said he had apprised the Home Minister of the ongoing relief and rehabilitation operations being carried out across flood-hit regions of the state. "He has given us his word that the Government of India will extend every possible form of help and assistance to address this emergency," Sarma stated. Sarma also expressed gratitude to Shah for personally reaching out to enquire about the flood conditions in Dhemaji, thanking the Home Minister for his concern.

River blocked by Arunachal landslide; Assam downstream put on flash flood alert

Sunday's heavy rains in Lower Siang, Arunachal Pradesh, set off a large landslide that completely blocked the Siji river, putting people and infrastructure in downstream areas at serious risk. With the river now dammed, the threat of flash floods has intensified for Assam lying further downstream. Officials have issued alerts and are urging residents of vulnerable low-lying areas to stay on high alert and take all necessary precautions.

Mumbai suburbs drenched by overnight downpour; several areas log over 100 mm in four hours

Fierce overnight rain lashed Mumbai's suburban belt, with multiple localities crossing the 100 mm mark within four hours, resulting in waterlogging and traffic hold-ups at various points across the city, civic authorities said. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data reveals that the highest rainfall was recorded at Veena Nagar in Mulund's eastern precinct — 160.4 mm — while Versova in the western suburbs clocked 156.8 mm during the same period. The prolonged overnight deluge caused widespread waterlogging and disrupted traffic flow at numerous suburban pockets in Mumbai.
