A tragic accident unfolded in Narayanpura village of Panna district, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday afternoon when a routine attempt to restore water flow at an agricultural field led to the deaths of a father and his son. The duo had descended into a 10 to 12 feet deep borewell pit to inspect and repair a malfunctioning water pump motor. The fatal incident took place in an agricultural land area known as Mutlan Har, falling under the jurisdiction of the Powai police station. The sudden demise of both individuals has cast a deep pall of gloom over the entire village community.
Sequence of Events at the Agricultural Field
According to the available details, the deceased have been identified as 55-year-old Ujagar Lal Varman and his 30-year-old son Atul Varman, both residents of Narayanpura village. The father and son had headed to their field in Mutlan Har after noticing that the borewell had stopped pumping water, halting the necessary irrigation supply for their crops. In an attempt to diagnose the issue and restart the water supply, they decided to inspect the pump motor located inside the borewell pit. The 30-year-old son, Atul Varman, was the first to climb down into the 10 to 12 feet deep pit to examine the electrical and mechanical connections of the motor.
Father Enters Pit to Check on Unresponsive Son
After entering the borewell pit, Atul Varman did not return to the surface for a considerable amount of time, nor did he respond to calls from above. Distressed by the lack of response and worried about his son's safety, 55-year-old Ujagar Lal Varman descended into the pit to investigate. Regrettably, the father also became trapped and unconscious inside the narrow enclosure. When neither father nor son emerged from the farm after a prolonged delay, anxious family members and neighboring villagers hurried to the Mutlan Har agricultural site in search of them.
Villagers Rescue Victims but Doctors Declare Them Brought Dead
Upon reaching the borewell site, relatives and locals looked inside the pit and found both Ujagar Lal Varman and Atul Varman lying motionless at the bottom. The villagers immediately initiated a local rescue effort while alerting the Powai police station about the emergency. Working together, local residents managed to extract both unconscious men from the pit and swiftly rushed them to the nearby Community Health Center (CHC) in Powai for urgent medical intervention. However, upon arrival, the attending medical officers examined both victims and pronounced them dead.
Investigation and Post-Mortem Underway
The exact medical cause behind the tragic fatalities remains under investigation. Preliminary suspicions suggest that the victims might have suffered a severe electric shock from the motor's power connection, or suffocated due to the accumulation of toxic gases and acute oxygen deficiency within the confined space of the borewell pit. Powai Block Medical Officer (BMO) Dr. Suresh Soni confirmed that both individuals were brought dead to the facility and stated that post-mortem procedures have been initiated to determine the precise cause of death. Local police officials from Powai station stated that they are awaiting the final autopsy report to confirm whether electrical shock, poisonous gas inhalation, or asphyxiation led to the tragic deaths.
