A major development has emerged from the Samsherganj area of Murshidabad district in West Bengal, where the prime accused in the murder of BJP worker Sujit Mondal has been killed in a police encounter. This dramatic turn of events has once again triggered intense political reactions and concerns over law enforcement across the state. According to available details, the suspect was taken by the CID to the old Dakbungalow area within the jurisdiction of Samsherganj police station, specifically to the room where Sujit Mondal was murdered, for a crime scene reconstruction. During this process, the main accused, Samayun Sheikh, made a desperate attempt to escape from custody, prompting police to retaliate with gunfire. The entire matter is currently under active investigation by the CID as heavy police deployment remains in place in the area.
The Crime Scene Reconstruction and Subsequent Shootout
Reports indicate that a few days prior, Sujit Mondal, a young BJP worker from Samsherganj, had gone missing before being brutally murdered. The perpetrators had chopped his body into pieces and disposed of them. Police had successfully apprehended Samayun Sheikh as the main accused in this gruesome killing. On Tuesday afternoon, police brought the accused to the Dakbungalow room under Samsherganj police station to recreate the sequence of events. While at the spot, the accused attempted to flee, leading to the police encounter. Sustaining critical injuries during the exchange, he was rushed in a wounded condition to Jangipur Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Following this violent episode, a heavy contingent of police personnel from the Samsherganj station has been deployed at the location to maintain law and order.
Background of the Murder and Administrative Overhaul
It is noteworthy that Sujit Mondal had gone missing under mysterious circumstances on August 28. The subsequent recovery of his dismembered body parts sent shockwaves throughout the region, leading to widespread public outrage and allegations of severe negligence against local law enforcement. Following intense pressure and administrative announcements, a massive reshuffle was executed within the police department. Several police officials were suspended, and the Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of the Samsherganj police station was closed. Furthermore, the entire investigation of the murder case was transferred to the CID. Prompted by these developments, the CID intensified its probe, leading up to the recent encounter of the accused, which has now prompted authorities to deploy heavy security forces across the region to prevent any escalation.
