A shocking crime driven by financial distress has come to light from Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh. Pressed by medical debts following his wife's recent childbirth, a local worker resorted to murder and robbery to arrange money. The individual targeted an middle-aged woman grazing her cattle, murdered her in cold blood, and escaped with her gold ornaments. The local police successfully cracked the blind murder mystery, apprehending the perpetrator and recovering the stolen valuables that had been pawned at a local jewelry shop.
Cattle Herder Targeted and Robbed in Hirapur
The crime occurred in Hirapur village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Tirodi police station in Balaghat. On 8 October, 53-year-old Khelanbai Turkar left her home as usual to graze her cattle and buffaloes in the nearby open fields. When she failed to return, her body was located in suspicious circumstances, sending shockwaves through the rural community. Initial medical examination confirmed foul play. Investigators noticed that the gold ear tops and mangalsutra worn by the victim were missing from her body. With no immediate eyewitnesses, the police registered a case of murder and robbery against unidentified persons.
Looted Gold Pawned for 25 Thousand Rupees
After committing the brutal murder, the accused, identified as Rupesh Markam, immediately sought to convert the stolen gold into cash. He visited a local goldsmith and pawned the stolen mangalsutra and ear tops for a sum of 25,000 rupees. During the course of the investigation, law enforcement officers analyzed local leads and zeroed in on Markam, a resident of Jamrapani village, whose activities appeared suspicious. Upon sustained interrogation, Markam confessed to attacking the woman, fleeing with her gold items, and pledging them to a jeweler. Police subsequently retrieved the complete set of pawned jewelry based on his disclosures.
Private Hospital Delivery Expenses Driven Crime
Providing details of the case, Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra stated that the suspect worked as a daily wage employee at a mall in Tirodi. Markam's wife had recently delivered a child at a private hospital, resulting in an expense of approximately 50,000 to 60,000 rupees. Unable to afford the hefty medical charges on his limited earnings, Markam found himself under extreme pressure to clear the outstanding hospital dues. Desperate to obtain immediate funds, he decided to commit robbery.
Prequel Theft Before Murder Incident
Police investigations further revealed that Markam had embarked on a criminal path shortly before the murder took place. In an initial effort to gather the required sum, he broke into an unoccupied house in Bonkatta village and committed theft. However, since the proceeds from that burglary were insufficient to settle his debt, he planned a larger robbery. Observing Khelanbai Turkar alone in an isolated spot in Hirapur village, he launched a deadly assault on her. Police have presented the accused in court and secured police remand to complete further legal formalities.
