A sharp political confrontation has surfaced over electoral roll verification after BJP MLA Ram Kadam targeted Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on October 4. Questioning the Congress leadership over its stance on the Special Initial Revision (SIR) of voter lists, the legislator asked whether the party opposes the removal of bogus entries. He argued that levelling unsubstantiated allegations against standard sanitisation procedures damages the credibility of constitutional systems.
Revisiting Congress Demands in Maharashtra
Focusing on the political history of the issue in Maharashtra, the BJP lawmaker remarked that the opposition appears to have disregarded its own recent campaigns. He stated that only a few months ago, Congress leaders had organized rallies in the state demanding that fake entries be purged from electoral registers, even seeking a postponement of elections on those grounds. Highlighting this shift, he remarked, “Whenever a list of dishonest leaders is compiled in the future, Rahul Gandhi's name will sit at the very top.”
Kadam maintained that the revision exercise exists specifically to verify entries and guarantee an accurate, transparent electoral register. Instead of continuously raising charges of stolen votes, the opposition leadership should clarify its actual position regarding the disqualification of fraudulent voter registrations, he argued.
Rebuttal to P. Chidambaram and Defense of Election Commission
The Mumbai legislator also directed criticism toward senior Congress figure P. Chidambaram, questioning how a senior leader could overlook rallies his own colleagues staged across Mumbai on the exact matter of bogus voters. On October 3, Chidambaram had commented on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, suggesting that stepping down immediately would represent the most prudent step amid talks of internal discord within the panel. Rejecting that statement, Kadam dismissed attacks on the Chief Election Commissioner as a calculated political tactic designed to weaken trust in public institutions.
Economic Numbers, Global Standing, and Allegations of Disruptive Agendas
Linking institutional respect to broader national progress, Kadam pointed out that India's real GDP expansion of 7.8 percent demonstrates substantial economic momentum. He observed that heads of state from Australia, the United States, and Russia have commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India's rapid development, reflecting well on all 140 crore citizens.
However, the legislator claimed that international adversaries displeased with the nation's upward trajectory are financing campaigns aimed at fostering domestic disorder and denigrating constitutional agencies. Kadam alleged that the Congress party, the Thackeray brothers (Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray), and their political allies are spearheading narratives that ultimately compromise national institutions.
