Security concerns have escalated once again in Manipur's hill district of Kangpokpi after insurgents staged a lethal ambush targeting a moving vehicle. Official confirmation indicates that four individuals were killed in the sudden assault, while one person remains unaccounted for following the chaos. Law enforcement agencies and security units have launched intensive search efforts to locate the missing individual while reinforcing vigilance across sensitive routes in the district.
Ambush Details and Pattern of Violence in Kangpokpi
The deadly ambush reflects ongoing volatility in Kangpokpi district, which has previously witnessed severe militant activity. Only a few months prior, an insurgent attack in Loibol Khulen village located within the same district resulted in three fatalities and left seven homes burned to ashes. According to statements released by KIM, the apex body representing the Kuki community, that earlier attack was carried out by heavily armed cadres belonging to NSCN-IM alongside its affiliate outfit ZUF (K). The latest attack on the vehicle underscores the lingering security challenges in the region.
Imphal Valley Crackdown: 5 Militants and Juvenile Detained
In a parallel security breakthrough within the state, security personnel neutralised an active extortion network operating across the Imphal Valley. Official updates shared by police on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of five insurgents and the detention of one juvenile during targeted drives conducted on Tuesday across Bishnupur, Imphal East, and Imphal West districts. All arrested individuals are affiliated with the banned organization United Peoples Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) and were implicated in coercive extortion, intimidation, and kidnapping schemes.
Among those apprehended is 51-year-old P. Koireng Singh, who was intercepted at the Koirengai Forest Gate in Imphal West district. Authorities revealed that Singh holds formal employment as a gardener within the state Forest Department. During search procedures, officers recovered 23 official letterheads of UPPK from the suspects. Upon interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in issuing threats, demanding ransom, and conducting abductions across valley districts.
Joint Security Raid Yields Munitions Cache and Destroys Bunkers
Simultaneously, a joint contingent comprising Manipur Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) executed a coordinated cordon and search operation targeting insurgent strongholds. The raid covered Taphou Kuki village in Kangpokpi district and the adjoining area of Taphou Liangmai in neighboring Senapati district. During the operation, troops dismantled three illegal fortified bunkers, including two bunkers located in Taphou Kuki and one in Taphou Liangmai.
The joint forces seized a significant stash of arms and ammunition from the search locations. The recovered cache included two single barrel breach loading (SBBL) guns, 78 live rounds of 12-bore ammunition, alongside spent shell casings from AK-47 assault rifles and.22 caliber rifles. Law enforcement officials emphasized that combined security operations will continue unabated to restore stability and eradicate illegal insurgent infrastructure across affected districts.
