Tensions flared up sharply in Manipur's Senapati district on Monday as multiple residential structures were set on fire and a security personnel was wounded during an active exchange of gunfire between two factions. The sudden escalation prompted authorities to tighten security gridlines across the affected zones to prevent further deterioration of law and order.
How the Violence Unfolded
The unrest was primarily reported from the Taphou Naga locality, unfolding in the wake of an earlier arson incident in the adjacent Kangpokpi district during the early hours of the day. According to official accounts, a dwelling in Taphou Kuki village was targeted and allegedly torched at approximately 2:30 am. Just a few hours later, the violence spilled over as several more houses were reduced to ashes in Naga Taphou within Senapati district around 4:00 am.
CRPF Personnel Injured in Crossfire
The situation took a severe turn when armed hostilities broke out between two opposing groups in the Taphou Naga area at around 9:20 am. During the ensuing gun battle at Liangmai Taphou, a 54-year-old constable attached to the 36th CRPF Battalion sustained a suspected gunshot wound to his foot. He was promptly rushed for medical attention and is currently undergoing treatment at the District Hospital in Senapati. Authorities confirmed that no civilian injuries or casualties have been recorded in connection with these clashes thus far.
Highway Blockades and Community Demands
The widespread arson sparked immediate public outrage, with local residents gathering in large numbers at the Senapati gate. Protesters burnt logs and rubber tyres directly on National Highway 2, causing a complete standstill in vehicular movement along the key transit route. Meanwhile, the Taphou Kuki Village Authority released a strongly worded statement denouncing the massive destruction of property, pressing the district administration and local law enforcement to track down the perpetrators within a strict 24-hour window and initiate prompt legal action.
Deepening Community Rifts and Official Response
This fresh bout of violence has significantly heightened underlying tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities in the area, following a string of prior confrontations. In response to the crisis, armed forces have been heavily deployed throughout the troubled sectors, and comprehensive security protocols have been reinforced to deter any further flare-ups.
