A prominent civil society group based in Imphal, the Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba Kangleipak, has formally called for the immediate resignation of Manipur BJP president A. Sarda Devi, holding her accountable for failing to safeguard the state’s indigenous population and ignoring the actions of party members who have openly advocated for a separate administrative setup.
Accusations of Inaction and Prioritizing Party Interests
In an official statement released by its publicity secretary, Lamdamba Salam, the organization questioned why Sarda Devi has neglected to initiate disciplinary measures, including the outright expulsion of seven Kuki BJP MLAs, who have reportedly lobbied the Government of India for a separate administration. The group argued that the state president chose to prioritize narrow political party interests over the fundamental lives, safety, and political rights of indigenous communities, particularly amidst the backdrop of continuous violence and civilian casualties that have plagued the region since May 3, 2023.
Questions Surrounding Leadership and Accountability
Challenging her leadership capabilities, the organization asserted that individuals holding positions of high responsibility must be held answerable for their responses during a severe crisis threatening public security. The group also drew attention to alarming incidents, including the alleged killings and mutilation of Naga civilians, alongside the tragic deaths of three men hailing from the Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency, which have deeply aggravated safety concerns across the state.
Growing Public Discontent and Street Protests
Highlighting the expanding wave of public outrage, the organization pointed out that women across multiple localities have organized fierce protests against Sarda Devi, even going as far as burning her effigies in public view. These demonstrations were described as a direct reflection of public fury over unyielding civilian deaths and the perceived failure of political leadership to guarantee basic safety. The group concluded that if holding multiple responsibilities simultaneously obstructs her ability to discharge duties effectively, she must step down from the post of state BJP president without delay.
