Indian equity benchmarks succumbed to sustained selling pressure on Friday, 23 October, as aggressive profit-booking dragged headline indices into negative territory by the close of the trading session. Market sentiment remained firmly under the grip of bears throughout the day, offering little room for an intraday rebound. While large-cap counters experienced relatively controlled losses, the broader market endured severe damage. Heavy unwinding in mid-tier and smaller companies led the smallcap index to plunge by roughly 2.9 percent, while the midcap gauge dropped 2.5 percent.
Closing Metrics for Benchmark Indices
At the final bell on 23 October, the BSE Sensex settled lower by 125.56 points, or 0.17 percent, ending at 73,123.83. Concurrently, the NSE Nifty conceded 87.65 points, representing a decline of 0.39 percent, to conclude at 22,600. The across-the-board weakness reflected an urgent tendency among participants to lock in gains across varied industries, leaving the key barometer indices pinned beneath their opening thresholds.
Sector-Wide Decline Leaves All Indices in Red
Demonstrating the extensive nature of the selloff, every sectoral index concluded the session in negative territory. The Nifty Consumer Durables index suffered the sharpest percentage retreat, descending 2.63 percent to settle at 33,922.00. The Nifty Metal index experienced similar distress, shedding 2.71 percent to land at 11,478.20. Real estate and state-owned banking counters also took significant hits, with Nifty Realty falling 2.38 percent and Nifty PSU Bank contracting 2.26 percent. The Nifty Chemical index dropped 2.32 percent. Additional pressure was visible across Nifty Bank, which fell 1.16 percent, Nifty Media losing 1.33 percent, Nifty Pharma falling 1.04 percent, Nifty FMCG slipping 0.99 percent, Nifty Auto shedding 0.60 percent, and Nifty IT sliding 0.27 percent.
Performance of Key Gainers and Losers
Among the constituents of the Nifty 50, several heavyweight names posted sharp declines. Shriram Finance ended as the primary laggard of the day, plummeting 3.98 percent. It was joined on the downside by Adani Enterprises, which slipped 2.86 percent, JSW Steel, dropping 2.83 percent, and Jio Financial Services, contracting 2.74 percent. Adani Ports and Tata Steel each declined by 2.70 percent, while Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles fell 2.00 percent.
Conversely, a handful of individual stocks managed to navigate against the prevailing tide. Eternal emerged as the session's premier gainer, jumping 4.25 percent to close at ₹317.40. Gains were also registered by Apollo Hospitals, advancing 1.65 percent, and ONGC, rising 1.11 percent. Other positive contributors included Asian Paints with an increase of 0.97 percent, TCS moving up 0.92 percent, UltraTech Cement gaining 0.84 percent, Maruti Suzuki rising 0.54 percent, Cipla adding 0.53 percent, Reliance Industries climbing 0.46 percent, and Infosys managing a marginal gain of 0.04 percent.
