China is navigating an uneven economic recovery as manufacturing shows signs of easing while the services sector remains sluggish, according to insights shared by BNY’s Wee Khoon Chong. The country's factory slump is showing mild improvements, with manufacturing purchasing managers' index readings edging higher and export orders returning to expansion territory. However, construction and service industries continue to lag behind, highlighting a recovery that is far from uniform across all domestic sectors.
Overhauling the Real Estate Sector
In response to ongoing economic challenges, Chinese authorities have rolled out comprehensive property market reforms designed to bolster homebuyer protections and accelerate a transition toward a modernized housing development model. The newly introduced regulations tighten existing presale rules, actively promote completed-home sales, and mandate enhanced safeguards for consumer funds through strictly regulated accounts alongside handover-with-certificate practices.
Under the revised framework, mortgage disbursements for homes sold post-completion will occur strictly after sales registration is finalized. For projects sold via presale, funding distribution will face delays until formal completion registration is achieved. Additionally, authorities have extended the maximum duration of individual home loans from 30 years to 40 years, offering extended repayment structures for borrowers.
Foreign Exchange Markets Navigate Rate Path Expectations
Currency markets saw notable movements at the start of the week. The GBP/USD pair managed to retrace part of its recent three-day decline, hovering near the 1.3550 region on Monday. A fresh downward correction in the Greenback assisted Cable in recovering lost ground, while market participants continued monitoring potential trajectories for Federal Reserve monetary policy.
Simultaneously, the EUR/USD pair worked to trim losses from Friday's sharp pullback, managing to flirt with the crucial 1.1600 barrier during early weekly trading. This minor rebound followed mild selling pressure directed at the US Dollar as investors weighed the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike arriving in September.
Precious Metals and Cryptocurrencies Hold Ground
Gold extended its recent decline, briefly sliding below the $4,400 region per troy ounce on Monday. The pullback in the precious metal occurred despite a softer stance from the US Dollar and persistent geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, as rising yields continued to cap bullish momentum.
In the digital asset space, Bitcoin maintained strong resilience above $78,000 as market participants anticipated a potential push toward the $80,000 threshold. Ethereum continued exhibiting a constructive technical posture by holding firm above $2,400, while Ripple displayed early recovery indicators near the $1.37 mark.
Record Surge in Diesel Markets
While broader crude oil markets may appear calmer compared to previous months, the diesel sector is telling a significantly different story. The US diesel crack spread, representing the premium of ultra-low sulphur diesel futures over WTI crude, recently surged past $100 per barrel for the first time ever, eventually touching an intraday record high just above $102.00.
