Mizoram is intensifying its drive to scale up its renewable energy capacity as state authorities advance multiple solar and hydropower projects across the region. Officials noted that these continuous efforts aim to harness clean energy resources more effectively to meet growing local electricity demands.
Generation Figures and Commissioned Solar Plants
During the 2024-25 period, the state recorded a generation of 41.86 million units of solar power alongside 31.04 million units derived from Small Hydel Projects, according to official records. Several solar installations are already operational throughout the state. These include a 20 MWp facility located at Vankal within the Khawzawl district, a 2 MWp installation at Tlungvel in the Aizawl district, and a 10 MWp project situated at Thenzawl in the Serchhip district. Furthermore, a 5 MWp ground-mounted solar initiative at Sumsuih in Aizawl remains under active construction.
New Sites and Rooftop Solar Progress
Authorities have identified additional locations across Mizoram for prospective solar power ventures. Execution work concerning tenders and Power Purchase Agreements for projects spanning various sites is currently underway. Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Mizoram accumulated 1,532 applications for rooftop solar systems by August 14. Installations have successfully reached completion across 1,417 households from this pool. Additionally, the state is pursuing Government Building Solarisation to evaluate and equip government infrastructure with rooftop solar setups.
Hydropower Initiatives and Developments
On the hydropower front, the administration is pushing forward with the 24-MW Tuirini Small Hydel project in the Aizawl district as well as the substantially larger 132-MW Tuivai Hydroelectric project situated in the Saitual district near the border with Manipur. The foundation stone for the Tuirini venture has already been laid, accompanied by the completion of formation cutting for a 9-km approach road. Forest clearance proceedings, social impact assessments, and land acquisition procedures are actively progressing. Tendering preparations are also underway with support from a project management consultant. The project holds an administrative approval valued at Rs 676.98 crore. The state has secured an expenditure sanction of Rs 10.50 crore alongside an allocation of Rs 50 crore, while seeking additional financial sanction.
