Foreign exchange markets are witnessing defined boundaries across major currency pairs, with the Chinese Yuan positioned for gradual strength against the US Dollar. According to strategists Quek Ser Leang and Lee Sue Ann at United Overseas Bank, the USD/CNH currency pair is anticipated to edge slightly lower during intraday trading while remaining closely confined within a tight band between 6.7000 and 6.7100. Over a broader horizon of one to three weeks, their assessment maintains a steady range-bound expectation between 6.6950 and 6.7270. From a one to three month perspective, the pair is expected to gradually drift downward as long as it continues trading below its cloud resistance level located near 6.7815.
Technical Trajectory and Daily Bands for USD/CNH
Analyzing the short-term price momentum, the strategists highlighted an incremental pickup in downward pressure on the Greenback. Previously, the currency pair was anticipated to oscillate sideways in the range of 6.7000 to 6.7105. However, price action saw the US Dollar climb up to 6.7146 before facing a prompt pullback that brought it back to close flat at 6.7038. With intraday momentum tilting marginally to the downside, the Dollar may slip slightly lower during the session while remaining well inside the projected 6.7000 to 6.7100 parameter.
This evaluation aligns with the multi-week outlook originally outlined last Tuesday on September 29, when spot pricing stood at 6.7110. The strategic projection continues to point toward consolidation within the 6.6950 to 6.7270 window. Crucially, the multi-month trajectory hinges on technical hurdles, where maintaining trades beneath the 6.7815 resistance preserves the broader bias toward Yuan resilience against the Dollar.
Aussie Dollar Approaches Milestone Amid Broader Risk Appetite
Beyond the Yuan, commodity and regional currencies displayed notable movement as market dynamics evolved on Tuesday. AUD/USD advanced further, securing its third consecutive session of gains and approaching striking distance of the significant 0.7000 benchmark. An overall enhancement in broader risk sentiment provided steady momentum to the Australian currency, which was further amplified by fresh selling pressure surrounding the US Dollar across trading desks.
Japanese Yen Navigates Central Bank Crossroads Near 158.00
In contrast, the Japanese Yen encountered headwinds as the USD/JPY pair climbed back above the 158.00 threshold during early European trade on Tuesday. The currency pair derived strength from the Yen's inability to capitalize on expectations of potential policy tightening from the Bank of Japan, even as risks of official currency intervention loomed in the background. Ahead of an extensive lineup of Japanese economic releases and an unclear schedule for future central bank adjustments, the Yen remains hovering near 158.00.
Supporting the Greenback in this cross is persistent geopolitical friction combined with elevated US bond yields, which keep the Dollar anchored near its yearly peaks even as market wagers on an October interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve begin to recede.
Gold Battles Resistance While ECB Faces Policy Puzzle
In precious metals, Gold built on its modest upward correction from Monday. However, the yellow metal encountered resistance and struggled to regain the critical level of $4,200 per troy ounce during Tuesday's dealings. The underlying support for Gold stemmed from a weakening Dollar trajectory coupled with falling yields across the US Treasury curve.
Meanwhile, European monetary authorities confront complex conditions. Under ordinary economic environments, inflation running nearly double the mandated target would prompt the European Central Bank to implement clear interest rate increases. Yet unusual market conditions have complicated this playbook, as independent tightening across the bond market has already assumed part of the restrictive workload, confronting policymakers with a delicate monetary balancing act.
